DD is 13 and has been vomiting after eating pretty much every meal for the past three weeks, bar a few days. Been back and forth to the GP like a yoyo and so far she's been prescribed:
prochlorperazine (anti-sickness) - didn't work.
lansoprazole (reduces acid) - worked for a few days, then stopped working
domperidone (anti-sickness, I think) - worked for two meals
currently domperidone and ranitidine - not working

Makes very little difference what she actually eats - toast is as likely to come back up as spaghetti bolognese, occasionally not even water stays down. GP is puzzled as nothing they've tried has worked for longer than three days. They don't seem hugely fussed about the fact that she's not getting much in the way of nutrients though.

She's just had blood tests done, but results won't be back for a week, and has a breath test for hylio(?) booked, but that can't be done till 14 days after stopping the lansoprazole.

Any suggestions as to what it could be, and anything else we could be trying? She's now being sick not just after eating, but at least some fluid is staying down, as she's not dehydrated.

Sorry to ask but is she making herself sick?

IShallWearMidnight · 11/02/2012 14:03

no, she's not (should have put that in the op really). Not, it's definitely an "eat food, stomach hurts, rush to loo" scenario.

She needs a referral to a Gastroenterologist. Is it sill the same if she eats little bits just more often?

sodapops · 11/02/2012 14:12

I take prochlorperazine and domperidone because other meds I take make me really nauseous. Fortunately for me they work.

DS1 has Cyclical Vomiting Syndrome. When it was at it's worse he took Pitzotifen to try to prevent the vomiting and Ondansetron to stop the vomiting when it did occur. Ondansetron is given to people having chemo and to people after GA's. It is expensive and GPs don't like to prescribe it but it really works.

She does need to see a Gastroenterologist.

sodapops - I've just googled cyclical vomiting syndrome - that sounds dreadful, your poor DS!

Little and often with food does help slightly, but it's hard trying to timetable in tablets 30 minutes before eating with when she feels her stomach has settled enough to be able to eat something. Plus we're not convinced many of the tablets are actually staying down in order to be able to work, which doesn't help.

Presumably the GP will want the test results back before referring her? In which case it's going to be another couple of weeks at the earliest, as the breath test is being done a week on Tuesday (so more time off school Sad).

Did anything trigger it?

PUMBA · 12/02/2012 08:49

Hi i have a little girl with lots of gastro problems , the only thing that stops her vomiting is odansatron, our gp refused to prescribe it as it is expensive untill her gastroenterologist insisted.

IShallWearMidnight · 17/02/2012 13:00

Sad still being sick, no triggers for types of food, or times, sometimes half an hour after eating, sometimes in the night. All blood tests have come back normal, still waiting for coeliac results though, and breath test for whatever it is will be next week.
GP today is referring to hospital, but think even if marked urgent it will be a couple of weeks before they see her. She's already missed two weeks of school, plus this half term week, really don't want her to miss any more.
Poor DD Sad.

My ds (age 11) has Cyclical Vomiting Syndrome and what you are describing sounds just like it. We have just been to see THE expert on the syndrome who happens to be at a hospital near us here in Los Angeles. He gave some great suggestions for treatment with no side effects. Please feel free to contact me through Mumsnet if you would like more information.

Has she been tested for giardia parasite? We have all had that in our house and the symptoms are similar, + diarrhea.
Giardia testing requires giving a stool sample and they have to specifically look for it. It can also be missed so usually need to give up to 3 samples.

ohh, this has popped up again! An update if anyone's interested - 6 weeks of vomiting, two trips to A&E and a LOT of crying at a very nice doctor got us a quick appointment with a gastro (after a big case conference with several paediatricians to decide who was going to be responsible) later, she ended up with omperazole and movicol, and the direct phone number of the gastro for if it didn't improve. Which it did after about a week, and she's been OK since then thankfully.

I've just caught up with this now. Glad that she is doing ok now.

Reenypip · 10/05/2012 12:27

Did they say what was wrong?
The medication you said they gave her, one is for reducing acid and the other is a laxative
