Abdominal ultrasound

I've namechanged for this.

I've been referred for an abdominal and pelvic ultrasound, as I've been having pain in my kidneys.

Can anyone with any experience/knowledge help me out, here, please?

I'm wondering if, even though the pain is in my kidneys, they'll also check out my liver? And if so, will they tell me if there's anything wrong with it?

I used to be a very heavy drinker, and am scared about the state of my liver.

Also, are ultrasound scans reliable and sensitive enough to pick up on liver (and kidney) damage, or do they often miss it?

They will check all the major bits, kidneys, liver, gall bladder, ovaries, appendix, etc.
The person doing the ultrasound may not say anything, whether all is ok or if find anything. The consultant will normally tell you the results.
Blood and urine test can also detect if there is any problems with your liver, kidney, etc.

You say you use to be a heavy drinker. The liver can repair itself and any minor damage.....so seen as you've stopped if there was any minor damage it may have repaired itself.
Also, if you had any major liver problems you'd be having symptoms, most common jaundice.

Thanks Reenypip. Urine test was clear, and I'm still waiting for the blood test results.

If I get the all-clear on this scan, I will thank my lucky stars and get very serious about my health. It's been on my mind a lot, as I have a new baby, and I sometimes get scared that I may have damaged myself so much that I will leave him motherless, suddenly.

No signs of jaundice, though, I don't think. (It is really obvious, isn't it - not something you can be unsure about?)

Hi, I know what you mean, I have a 9 month old baby, and I feel so lucky to have him. I was told I wouldn't have a child of my own but I now do :-)
Plus I have multiple chronic health problems including a spinal cord injury and fractured spine (I'm partially paralysed and in a wheelchair)
I've already been in hospital a few times since he was born, and I'm expecting more planned surgery too.
I love him to bits. When I'm well enough I give him 110%. He's everything to me.

AS REENY said they check everything. Had one recently and was surprised at how much they did scan

they will tell you the results and if they dont, then ask.

THey can see defects in the liver and also blood tests can tell a bigger picture
