Mirena for heavy periods at 51?

There you have it - I'm 51, having regular and very heavy and debilitating periods and the dr has suggested Mirena. I have previously had an ectopic pregnancy which has left me very scared of any kind of coil lark.

Anyone had experience with Mirena in this situation? I was a little dazzled by seeing the ob/gyn who is very charismatic and delivered DD 10 years ago. He is famous in Melbourne for women having another baby so they get to see him again!

It's a common enough suggestion. There's no reason why you can't double up with other methods too- condoms or maybe even the pill if you are worried about PG - but TBH the likelihood at 51 is very small.

I had a Mirena fitted for this reason. My GP says they have saved countless women from having hysterectomies.
Worked like magic.

I'm 51 , and on my second Mirena coil .
Haven't had a period for 10 years . Occasional tiny amount of spotting .
It's brilliant for me .

Bearcat · 12/02/2012 21:32

I'm 52 and had one 2 years ago for very heavy periods.
It's been brilliant.
Probably bled very lightly for about 6 weeks and then nothing until about 2 weeks ago, and then a very light period ( could be my last maybe???)
Would definitely recommend.

Im 38 & have had the mirena for 3yrs now for the same reason OP.
I've never looked back, although I do have periods they are very light & hardly any pain now. It did take a good year for it to calm down tho, I persevered with it & was def worth it IMO/E.

I am 41 and my ob/gyn has suggested the Mirena coil for the same reasons, heavy and debilitating periods. I've been thinking about it and I think I will go for it next month, after the results from the smear test come back.

cece · 13/02/2012 11:29

I had mine put in for the same reason at the age of 42.

I had spotting on and off for the first 6 weeks, but very very light.

Since then I have a 'period' every 3 weeks - 3 months, quite irregular.

However they are no big deal. They are very very light (empty moon cup once every 24 hours and not full even then).

So I would say it has helped me a lot.

SecretSquirrels · 13/02/2012 11:48

I agree the fitting is painful but very much worth it.

cyb · 13/02/2012 11:52

jajas I couldnt have one fitted because my womb is a weird shape. they did an investigation under GA which was fine. I woudl go for GA if you can

MusicLover · 13/02/2012 15:16

Yes I found it very painful to have fitted, just like a severe period pain!
That was when I found out that I had a tilting/sloping womb, which they were bothing discussing whilst my legs a kimbo & my fangina on full show.....oooh the joys-NOT Blush

cece · 13/02/2012 15:50

My fitting was OK. A bit of discomfort but I wouldn't say painful really.

saffronwblue · 14/02/2012 06:49

Thanks everyone. The fitting is what I am terrified of. Despite giving birth twice I think I was so traumatised by an ectopic pregnancy that I flinch at the thought of any foriegnbody floating around. I find a pap test a major ordeal.

I had one put in three weeks ago - I'm 45, heavy periods and menopausal. Have oestrogel too to top up for the HRT side of things. So far, the bleeding has been manageable, hoping it will calm down and works for me! I'm not good with any sort of "exploratories", but it's manageable - dose up on ibroprufen!!

I have had 2 Mirena coils (I'm 35) and my periods have almost disappeared. Even my first one 2 weeks after having the coil was short and pain free.

I have had 2 c sections and didn't feel it going in at all.
