I gave it to one of my sons last night as he has chickenpox and I hadn't realised it was no longer for under 6s (he is 5 ) and I gave him 2.5ml to take his itching off. I think I may have got it mixed up with piriton, or is it the same thing? He went to sleep within 15 minutes and slept through which is completely unheard of. I am now, after looking at the bottle this morning, wondering whether I actually knocked him out with the stuff Blush though 2.5ml is actually half the recommended dose for 6 year olds. Does anyone know anything about it? is it okay to give it again or is there something that is recommended for under 6s?

Piriteze is different to Piriton - Piriteze contains cetirizine, which is meant to be one of the newer, non-sedating antihistamines. I'ld check with the pharmacist what they would recommend in your situation.

It is slightly different to Piriton, in that it contains a cetirizine rather than chlorphenamine. Both are antihistamines, but cetirizine doesn't (usually) make you feel drowsy. You won't have caused your DS any problems and it will have helped with the itching, but you might want to stick to Piriton in the future as it is licensed (ie. tested with proven effectiveness) for his age.

I'm a pharmacist btw. We can't recommend stuff that isn't licensed.

thank you both, I wonder why he fell straight asleep then Blush unless he has been itching for a while. He went from having no spots to having hundreds within minutes yesterday. i cannot believe I bought the wrong stuff. It was over £5 a bottle as well

Piriteze can cause drowsiness, but it's very rare. Maybe he was itch-free for the first time in a while, so relaxed! Or just that he was sleeping his illness off.

Keep the bottle in your medicine box as it's quite useful stuff to have in the house for hayfever, allergies, bites etc, and adults can use it as well as
children over six years.

Hope your DS feels better soon.
