I'm on Augmentin for lymphangitis at the moment, the doctor said it was ok to take while breastfeeding, I just googled it though because the doctor seemed very vague! Google came up with lots of gobbldegook but seems to be saying that I shouldn't be giving my baby the milk, and even that the use of augmentin in children under three has been implicated as a catalyst for autism! So if anyone knows whether it is safe to breastfeed whilst on it please let me know!

I'm expressing exclusively by the way, fed DD some of my more recent milk about two hours ago and she's been screaming for about an hour now... it's not my meds is it!!

I found a goodish website (eventually) that said in animal studies on the drug they found that small traces were present in breastmilk but that it wasn't enough to effect the infant... so rat's breastmilk is fine then, I do love those studies! sigh!

I looked on the GlaxoSmith website and it just said, 'caution should be exercised when administering Augmentin to nursing women.'

So not a definite 'do not give this'

4.6 Pregnancy and lactation

Reproduction studies in animals (mice and rats) with orally and parenterally administered Augmentin have shown no teratogenic effects. In a single study in women with preterm, premature rupture of the foetal membrane (pPROM), it was reported that prophylactic treatment with Augmentin may be associated with an increased risk of necrotising enterocolitis in neonates. As with all medicines, use should be avoided in pregnancy, especially during the first trimester, unless considered essential by the physician.

Augmentin may be administered during the period of lactation. With the exception of the risk of sensitisation, associated with the excretion of trace quantities in breast milk, there are no known detrimental effects for the breast-fed infant.

Thankyou I'm one of those people who never take pills for headaches so I always worry a bit when I know I have to take something...
