HELP! Anyone still up? Should I wake my dd to give her nurofen?

My dd aged 14 months has had a bit of a cold and tonight she developed a temperature of about 102. I gave her some calpol and put her to bed at 7pm, she has been fast asleep ever since and I have been monitoring her temperature with an ear thermometer, it did go down to about 101, then back up and now down to 101.5. Should I just leave her or should I wake her and give her some nurofen to bring the temp down? She has not really had a temperature at night since she was little and was waking in the night anyway so I don't really know what to do.

She had no sinister rashes or anything when I put her to bed and she seemed fine if a bit tireder than usual, but then she didn't sleep much today. Should I get her up and check again? And should I keep getting up in the night to check her temp or just leave her (I have a monitor so will hear if she wakes up.)

My dd has a temp at the mo too, I just waited for her to wake up and gave her more calpol.

CountessDracula · 16/11/2003 23:37

mieow, it's horrible isn't it? I have just realised how lucky I have been that it hasn't happened to her much. Poor little thing, she looks so sweet all pink cheeked snuggled up to her bear in her cot. Wish I could fit in there too...

DD has a cough too. DD1 had this last week and it was like suggling up to a hotwater bottle

Norma · 16/11/2003 23:42

Hi there, I would wake her up if I were you. My son is 20mths and has been vomiting and feeling generally unwell the past couple of days. He hasn't needed any pain relief this time , but if his temp. was up I wouldn't hesitate. It's best to keep their temps down if poss. and she'll probably be more comfortable if you give her another dose now. Having said that, you've got the monitor so I'm sure you'll be sleeping with one ear cocked anyway. Hope she feels better v. soon.

CountessDracula · 16/11/2003 23:42

Yes, dd's started with a cough too. I just worry in case she overheats in the night and has a fit or something (I know neurotic first time mum!!!) I will just go to bed I think and try and sleep as have busy day at work tomorrow.

Think I will set alarm clock for 2am just to be sure, what do you think?

Thanks Norma. She just seems so peaceful and it isn't going up any more, think I will monitor it again in half an hour then and if it's still up I'll wake her.

The chances are she will go straight back to sleep anyway

ScummyMummy · 16/11/2003 23:52

Hope she's better soon, CD. Since you're monitoring her so closely I think it'd be fine not to wake her right now.

CountessDracula · 16/11/2003 23:53

I'm not too worried about that, I would almost rather she was awake so I could check how she was!!!! I just don't want to disturb her cos she is very fast asleep and peaceful. Off to stick thing in ear now, will wake her if no change in temp and give her nurofen. BTW she is wearing a 2.5 tog grobag and a thin babygro in a room temp of about 19. Should I strip her off a bit, put a vest or thinner grobag on her?

Thanks scummy xx

Sorry, not very good at judging, but you definately do not want to risk overheating. I would be tempted to do away with the gro bag and if you do wake her change her nappy at the same time so she gets a chance to cool down. Go by your gut instincts, they are usually right.

CountessDracula · 17/11/2003 00:02

Her temp is the same. 101.5 is not really that high for a baby is it? I remember when she was little it was 103.7 which nearly gave me a heart attack.

Think I will leave her after all. Or maybe not. OH GOD OH GOD I DON'T KNOW !!!

Hope you and dd are ok CD and haven't had a dreadful night ...
I personally would have left DS (not woken him up) but would have monitored him in the night ...
My DS was always having temps as a baby and young toddler and my philosophy was to let him sleep it off ... but I did watch him (like you are doing) and cool him down by stripping him off a bit ...

CountessDracula · 17/11/2003 09:43

Well thanks everyone for your advice/help - I got dd up, stripped her off and cooled her down, gave her some nurofen and some cool water, then she wanted a bottle so I gave her one as she hadn't eaten any supper. She then slept through until 8am, I popped in a couple of times in the night but she was fine. Temp gone this morning

CountessDracula · 17/11/2003 16:53

Her temp has been normal all day but has just shot up to 103.5

Have given nurofen and am taking her to the doc now. She is quite floppy, I have just laid her in her cot and she's gone to sleep immediately. Any advice?

prufrock · 17/11/2003 17:06

Floppiness and going to sleep straight away don't necessarily mean anything other than that she's knackered from fighting the infection. Go to the doc just to be on the safe side, but try not to worry too much.

sunchowder · 18/11/2003 15:31

I hope she is better today CD, it is so hard to know what to dogo with your instincts they say. The fever comes up to kill the bug, so sometimes the best thing to do is to ride it out, let them heat up, make sure they are as comfortable as possible, and hydrated of course. I always slept right next to my DD when she was sick and was feeling her constantlyI didn't even need a thermometer after a while!!
