Should I take my 4m old baby to the doctor to check out her cough?

dd2 has had a cough for appx 6 dyas now. I had a panic last week when I thought it was whooping cough but I think I just read too deeply into the NHS Direct website.

Her cough is worst at night but present throughout the day also. It sounds most like a smokers cough - like she is trying to cough up mucus.

Other than the fact it wakes her up more frequently through the night, it doesn't appear to bother her. She feeds well, has no fever, is a good colour, she's perky and alert and contented.

I hate bothering the doctor. I have taken dd2 one other time to the doctor at around 10 weeks old for a cough ~(one related to a cold) The doctor told me chest infections are extremely rare in breastfed babies.

Is it 'normal' for a baby to have a 'smokers'-type cough for 6/7 days and should I be giving her anything for it? Will it go away by itself?

When Alice had a cough for about 4 days I took her to the doctors as she too sounded like she was on 40 a day.

She was fine (of course ) but the doctor said I did the right thig in going.

I hate going to the doctor so much (itr feels like we are there for one reason or another every week at the moment) but I am glad I did go.

Definitely worth checking out. When I took my 10 week old DS2 to the doctor thinking they'd say "Oh, it's nothing", he ended up being hospitalised for bronchiolitis.

It probably isn't anything to worry about if your baby is feeding well, but better to check it out.

You are not 'bothering' the doc, you are taking your very young baby to be checked over.

Thanks. I took her and she's fine. The dr was lovely.
