Migraine! When will it finally ease off?!

I was diagnosed with a migraine on Saturday and have been in bed since Friday evening.
I previously assumed that migraine was like a horrendous headache but what I have feels more like a head injury - very painful on the left, like something wants to burst out of it, and lots of pain if I touch the back of my head on the pillow (not ideal as also 21 weeks pregnant.)

I realise that everyone has different symptoms etc but how long do these things, or can these things, drag on for? It seems like forever and doesn't seem to be showing many signs of wanting to leave (am slightly better but it's still very painful and I can't do much at all.)
Fed up!

they vary! I have two sorts....one that goes on for days, vague headache, intermittant vision and speech issues and the other which is vomiting for six-eight hours, blinding head pain and then I sleep like the dead for anything up to 8 hours.
Take it as easy as you can, avoid screens and bright lights ( these can tip me over the edge from the first type to the second type) and hope to hell it's a one off.

Mine always last for 3 days. I hope you feel better soon.

I got migraines in pregnancy, only with my girls oddly and in the last three months. I never had any pain at all but my vision went completely in blur and flashing. I also struggled to talk properly. I remember trying to tell my midwife I had a headache but it came out heckache no matter how hard I tried to say it. I was terrified but it would only last an hour or so. The tiredness afterwards was awful though.

Migraines can be a sign of pre eclampsia so I would report any to your midwife.

Thanks Catsmamma
I hope to hell its a one off too. I don't feel too bad otherwise, its just the left side of my head which is really bloody painful. I am also, as I have been in bed now for three days, getting bored out of my mind. Am not ill enough to simply sleep for hours on end, but am too ill go get up and do anything at all. Really shouldn't be on MN either really but needs must!

have you tried a cold pack? those head gel things can be helpful.

babysaurus · 05/02/2012 20:53

StayforNoone I have mentioned it to my GP and midwife as I was concerned about pre eclampsia too. I also wasn't sure what was wrong with me at first (as I say, I thought migraines were severe headaches rather than this 'injury' feeling I have.)

Thanks for the replies ladies. Hopefully the light will be at the end of the tunnel soon.

Tried cold peas, so same difference. It was quite soothing (till I ran out of peas!) DH's cold hands did the trick a bit too, massaging the sides of my head - the veins feel like they want to explode!

my GP recommended soluble paracetamol for my migraines when i was pregnant. i found them to be v helpful and much more effective than normal paracetamol pills. hope that helps.

I have to put cold compress on my head but hot water bottle on the base of my skull above my neck. Dunno why it helps but also stuffing my left ear with cotton wool helps.

I had pre-eclampsia with ds1 - had a blinding headache and kept throwing up, it wasn't like the migraines I get at all (except for the chucking up bit). That time I wanted someone to cut the top of my skull off as it felt as if it was going to explode.

Stay in the dark as long as possible. Get the midwife to check your wee and keep and eye on your fingers and ankles to reassure you that it is not p.e.

Most are allergies. If you find out which foods you are allergic to and stop eating them it will stop.
