Anyone ever have to have their ears syringed?

If so ... does it hurt and do they have to 'pull' your ear to get right angle for syringe? My hearing has just about gone in one ear and drops are making it worse, it's now feeling hot and itchy so I guess I'll have to get it syringed tomorrow but am very sensitive and don't like them being yanked about! Any advice? Thanks

I was in Turkey last year and my DH got a bit of an ear infection from our pool so we went to the local quacks and he had his done and it didn't hurt and loads of nasty bits came out.I nonchalantly said that I had suffered from all sorts of infections etc nad asked for him to look in my ear-I then had them syringed and screamed the house down with the pain-DH had to take my two boys out of there as they were so upset that Mummy was in so much pain-it will go down in my top 5 all time pain moments next to giving birth twice, dislocating my elbow and my knee! Bloody awful!!!!

Millie1
you shouldnt do it yourself
ring drs tomorrow and tell them you need your ears syringed
lie - tell them you've been putting drops in for a week - if they say thats not enough, say "it was last time"

old hand at this
hope you can hear again soon

Urgh, this subject is a real stomach turner (why click? I know I know.) DH has an appt. on monday to get is done and he loves it but also loves to tell me about the satisfyingly fat worm of wax that came out last time, with a black end like a stubbed out fag. Urgh, urgh, vom. Earwax rates very low on my top ten excretions list.

and good luck to you Millie!

I've had my ear syringed twice. I didn't like the feeling of having it syringed but it didn't hurt, just felt and sounded weird!

You can buy something from the chemist that you squirt into your ear (i can't remember the name at the moment), you keep your head tipped to one side. When you straighten your head, the liquid comes out along with the wax that was blocking your ear. DH had to use this when he lost the hearing in one ear and he worked for him.

Otex? Or pharmaceutical olive oil? Both recommended to me when I had blocked Eustachian tubes.

mummytosteven · 22/01/2006 20:13

Had it done once. Felt fine, Just a mildly weird sensation.

Millie1 · 22/01/2006 20:18

Otex ... have been using it since yesterday. Will put more in tonight - and steer clear of the DIY approach - and go to Drs tomorrow. Now, better get back to DS2 who has just been sick absolutely everywhere, poor thing.

When DH had a blocked ear, he used 'Audiclean' which was recommended by a MNer, it worked for him. We got it from out local chemist for just under £6.
