Tooth pain caused by sinuses ?

gingeroots · 03/02/2012 09:05

I have pain in some of my top teeth ( hard to say which one ) which comes and goes .
Agony when I come into the warm after being out this cold weather !
Dentist has told me it's my sinuses and told me to use antibiotic nose drops .
But I've never thought of self as having sinus problems ,not prone to colds or anything .
Could my sinuses really cause this pain ?
( off to swallow ibroprufen )

not medical but just experience - i just had a bout of sinusitis and it was bloody agony to chew on L side while i had it. felt like horrible toothache for about 3 days. so its possible??

FaithHopeAndKevin · 03/02/2012 09:09

I've had sinusitis and would have quite happily ripped all my teeth out and poured boiling water into both ears because it would have hurt less.

yes they can make your teeth sore. Theres really not much between your roots of your top teeth and sinus. Agree with adversecamber. Steaming and sudafed. good luck

gingeroots · 03/02/2012 09:17

But if it were sinus related wouldn't I feel congested ,stuffed up ?
My left nostril ( side affected ) is a little stuffy but I wouldn't have noticed were I not thinking about the tooth pain .
And wouldn't I have pain elsewhere ,not just my tooth ?
Oh dear I always find it hard to locate pains in my body ,maybe my left cheekbone area does feel funny ,but that could be from the tooth ?

if you have had an X Ray the dentist would probably have seen the sinus congestion I think

jalopy · 03/02/2012 09:21

I'm prone to sinus pain with no obvious congestion. If I get an episode, it causes my teeth to be very sensitive and at times painful. The cold weather is a killer during these times.

gingeroots · 03/02/2012 09:24

Mmmm thing is - he didn't x ray ,tapped teeth ,asked questions .
This is second time I've been and mentioned it ,first time while having other work done .
But of course by time I got appointment it wasn't hurting anyway .

I absolutely hate going to dentist and force myself so want to believe him ...but am a pessimist and fear the worst !

I also get the sinus pain affecting teeth, it is very common, I would trust him I think, its something he will be very familiar with.

Saltire · 03/02/2012 09:28

I agre with everyone else Grin. As a sufferer of sinusitis and congestion and everything that goes with it, I get a lot of tooth pain because of it,a nd I get it really bad if I have a cold.

gingeroots · 03/02/2012 09:29

Ok ,thanks guys .
Will try the drops .
And deploy largest scarf !

What are the antibiotic drops you speak off?
Mine are terrible at the moment, have just started a thread about them.

TapirBackRider · 04/02/2012 16:43

Every time I get a cold, my sinuses join in on the fun. I've had more trips to the dentist because of this than actual fillings (thankfully); my dentist has told me that it is very common to feel uncongested but still have the pain.

gingeroots · 05/02/2012 12:46

Sorry ,not antbiotic at all Blush
ephidrine or something like that .
Am in agony though - change of air temperature ( coming into warm from cold ) sets it off the most .
Ibroprufen not helping .
Short of staying permanently outside anyone know what might help ?
Maybe I should try ice pack ?

My DH regularly get sinusitis... During his last bout he told me he wanted to pull out his teeth just to relieve some of the pressure. Sudafed works well but often he requires antibiotics. Sad

PeanutButterCupCake · 05/02/2012 13:05

Saudades does nothing for me, sinutab sometimes takes the edge off. Warm steamy bath or washing hair over the bath often loosens it up....mine runs orange watery liquid, anyone else's? Blush

The ends of the nerves from some of the teeth are in the sinuses that are in the cheeks. So, if the sinuses are infected and the membranes are swollen they can cause pressure on these nerves and cause toothache.

gingeroots · 24/02/2012 10:20

GP yesterday as day after I finished antibiotics I was suddenly in agony .
This lasted 24 hours and then ,though cheek swollen agony much abated .

GP thinks it's not sinuses though obviously wasn't sure and has prescribed more antibiotics and steriod nasal spray .
I simply can't understand the way the symptoms change ,pain on face and cheek bones ( like electric shock ) ,pain absolutely centred on a tooth ( more near front than back ) ,pain all along top teeth on the affected side ,now very sore and I suspect swollen gums - high up ,near cheek not near tooth .
Cheek swollen near cheek bone .
Off to dentist shortly ,feel rather pathetically unnerved by not understanding what's going on ,and worm down with pain and pain killers .
( found co codamol + ibroprufen best )

worm = worn
though yes I do feel like a worm .

gingeroots- This sounds really similar to my pain, how did you get on in the end, did it clear up, was the toothache caused by the sinus?

gingeroots · 02/06/2012 06:10

Not a great update I'm afraid .
Dentist was,at time of above post , still thinking sinus and referred to dental hospital for clearer xray .
But he was also saying infection - in gum ,near crown ?

Aanyhooo ....after much faffing ,phone call to dental surgery to check referral gone ,( told yes ) ,personal visit to dental hospital ( couldn't get thru on phone ) no no referral ,phone surgery ," no ,no referral sent " ,dentist supposed to ring me ,doesn't .
I ring back and have row with dental receptionist - she " well who did you speak to "
me " I don't know but about my tooth and pain ... "
she " but who did you speak to ? "

So I still have pain and a small hard lump on gum and am putting off going back .
Mainly because I have other pain - frozen shoulder -that has meant paying privately for osteopath .

But v.worried about tooth and whats going on .
Clearly dentist hasn't referred me but I just can't face battling with them .
So many battles with health professionals and my mum at present .
Can only cope with a certain amount .

maybe an abcess starting,I had a lot of dental probs because of abcesses which were caused by s severe bout of sinusitis.I think it may be you sinus because of you mentioning the change in temperature affecting it,sinus are like cinder toffee filled with air and it will expand and contract with temperature

mumface · 06/06/2012 10:43

Think I have an idea what this may be- a blocked salivary gland, they can be very painful and cause referred facial nerve pain and toothache as nerves in the face can run straight through these glands. I have since my last post discovered a small pea sized lump inside my cheek behind the top molars and this is the site of a main gland, there are also main glands on the gums and under tongue. The blockage can be eased by sucking on a sour sweet or lemon and this can even dislodge it and cure the pain. Sometime a small stone or calcium deposit can cause it needing medical intervention. I am arranging an appointment atm to get my consultant to take a look.
