the saga of my bowel continues.....

I have been increasingly irritable over the last few years to the point where I was going about 6 times a day (loose).

After christmas I gave up bread/wheat and dairy and the bowel has calmed right down. Only going (normal consistancy) once a day. Not so bloated. less lower crampiness.

This week (since about saturday) I have hurt after eating. More stomach, higher up than before. Kind of crampy.

Why?
I'll get round to seeing an actual Dr at some point but until then please suggest a diagnosis/cure.

I'm wondering if you have some sort of ulcer? Sounds horrible, at any rate.

hippoCritt · 01/02/2012 23:21

I thought everything was Lupus according to House? I'd say see a real life doc, no idea even though I spend way too much time with Dr Google

Stress?

I sometimes go through phases of tummy cramps, ranging from v bad period pain type cramps through to cramps so bad I can't eat and on to vomiting/pooing everything up (including water). My mum helpfully suggested my body had become "naturally bulimic" (although that is exactly what it felt like - my body just did not want me to eat).

The doctor diagnosed me with Atypical Stress-Induced IBS and gave me some amazing pills (mebeverine) which have really, really helped. She had also said that there is an over the counter one which works quite well (seen it advertised recently... Buscopan or something?) but the prescription ones were stronger, and I was desperate so prescription it was.

My cure was to eat/drink nothing for a few days. Probably not medically advised but I did look much thinner at the end of the week

Ask your doctor.

I thought I'd got some food bug when it was at its worst - sleeping for a few hours, three sips of water, ten minutes rush to loo, sleep for a few hours, repeat... I went to the doctor and said "I can't really explain what's wrong, but here is everything that has happened" and she nodded wisely and said it was stress.

My tummy aches generally are the sort you get if you drink too much too-cold water too quickly (sort of achey and crampy and pressing quite high up).

I hope for you it is stress - my magic pills made it go away so quickly, I was so annoyed for not seeing the doctor earlier.

Dr Google has diagnosed me with Pancreatitis, Gallstones, an Ulcer and a Hiatus hernia. oh joy.

I'll phone the docs later. I hate doctors.

What sort of foods is it hurting after? How long does it take before the pain comes on? Is it a sharp pain or an ache?

eurochick · 02/02/2012 16:07

It sounds like IBS to me. I always found my food triggers would sometimes kick it off anyway but the effects were much worse when combined with stress.

You might have more than one trigger anyway, and not found the second one yet. My main one is dairy but for years I struggled to digest tough fruit and veg things (on food like peppers and grapes). So I could eat a dairy free meal and still get IBS symptoms and it took me ages to work out why.

I am coeliac (from being gluten intolerant) and get a lot of acid type indigestion. Sounds like it is all part of the same issue to me.

PastGrace · 02/02/2012 19:53

Dr Google gave me appendicitis, ovarian cysts, stomach ulcer, or pregnancy. Hope you managed to get through to your doctor.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 02/02/2012 20:00

Do you drink with meals? One thing that really helped sort out my IBS (as well as a similarly restricted diet to yours), was changing my drinking habits.
So I'd have a drink either half an hour before a meal or an hour after - never with.
Might be irrelevant but it made a difference in my case and you can't lose anything by trying. Oh, I also drank a pint of warm water first thing, then waited half an hour before having breakfast.
