Dental extraction in hospital?

My DH cracked his tooth yesterday, he went to the emergency dentist today who said it needs to be removed in hospital. He is on anti-biotics and she has put a temporary seal over it.

I am hugely dentist phobic so I am panicking. Why does he need to be seen in hospital for the removal? Will it harm him having this not very pleasant tooth in his mouth until they remove it (the tooth was basically black inside when it cracked)?

Oh and will they do it under a local, or concious sedation? Thanks for any replies.

Usually I refer pts for extraction in hospital by an oral surgeon if I expect it to be a very difficult extraction and I feel they would manage it better. Generally they don't have sedation or a general anasthetic but local anaesthetic. However usually they have an assessment appointment first in the hospital to discuss the treatment and options. Don't worry though....we dentist try to mAke things as stress free as possible!

Exactly what heels said. There are so many different variables we couldn't even scratch the surface here so my suggestion is, write down all of your questions now so when the initial consultation comes round wher all treatment aspects will be discussed, they don't leave your mind because you're stressed.

Don't worry, despite the awful press we get, we do try to do whatever is in the patient's best interests.
