1st appointment with Gynecologist regarding cysts on ovaries - what to expect?

This is my 1st appointment although I have known for a while I have cysts but they have always been under 5cms - now they are over that size, GP has referred me and I have my appointment on Monday - just want to be prepared and no nasty shocks and.

You won't have any nasty shocks!
Expect an internal and an ultrasound which may be transvaginal- not as bad as a smear - takes about 5 -10 mins depending how many pics they take.
They might also do a blood test C125 which is a cancer marker for OC but it's not likely if you are young and have several cysts.

Thanks amelia - I am not that young!!!! In my forties. I do have 2 cysts - one on each ovary.

If this is NHS and you have had the scans which is how they know the cysts are over 5cms, the consultant will probably just have a chat with you, go over your history and discuss your options.

When you get there the nurse will weigh you etc (I think they do that to keep you busy while you wait!!) and then you sit and wait your turn. Sometimes there is a nurse in there with you.

The consultant will ask you all about gynae history and other medical history, be prepared with dates of periods and history of that kind of stuff and also have a list of medication with you. He will ask you about any pain and abnormal bleeding.

There may be a nurse in there too and he may well examine inside and out (they are very good and it doesnt usually hurt). If he feels it necessary he may order further ultrasound and perhaps blood test unless they are up to date.

Then he will discuss options, i.e. watch and wait depending on size and cyst type and your pain level or whip them out.

Now before I get flamed I say 'he' above because I had two removed last year by a 'he' who was fab and I know have another and am seeing him again. Previously I had a 'she' who was also excellent and removed one. So I am now on my fourth and am very relaxed about them. Mine are dermoids so they are removed each time as docs dont like dermoids. Other types can be watched sometimes so see what your doc suggests?

To reassure you, the appointment will be fine, ask them anything, however trivial you think it may seem to them.

By the way despite all my surgeries and cyst removals apparently both my ovaries are still fully functioning. They just keep making cysts!

Good luck.

Thank you, well I went and the appointment was all over within 10 mins. He asked me my history and said that he was happy with the scan (it was done at the beg of Dec) and so I did not need another one. He said the cyst was complex and needed to come out. He will not do surgery on me as I weigh too much. So he is referring me to another hospital and another consultant who can do things to the cyst with an ultra sound to guide where the needle will go. ( although I am not entirely sure - the word exacerbate was used I think ).

I am thinking of going to see my GP and speak with him and see if he knows anything, The consultant was not exactly friendly.

I also had a blood test done - C125

So I guess its just a waiting game now.

The word you want is aspirate- means to draw fluid off .

Amelia - yes that's right, knew it sounded something like that! Thank you

The consultant will write to your GP, give the letter chance to arrive before your appointment!

The consultant you get referred to may be more friendly. If they are concerned about surgery becuase of your weight then they may be suggesting that they aspirate to be able to test the contents of the cyst to make sure it isnt anything nasty and can be left and watched for a while.

The CA125 gives them more of an idea of this too but is not conclusive.

Dont panic and best of luck.
