F*ck it, think my hole is infected (wisdom tooth)

arsing buggeration. Had 2 wisdom teeth out last sat and Ive been in quite a bit of pain, and still bleeding. spoke to the hospital yesterday, and they said it sounds like deep tissue bruising.

fair enough

woke up this morning with funny taste in my mouth, finally able to open my mouth wide enough to have a look and there is a whitish/yellowish lump in the hole, my ear and cheekbone are throbbing and I feel rotten.

its infected isnt it?

waiting for hospital to call me back, again.

I used Difflam oral rinse, which is a pain relieving liquid that was great, I was holding it in my mouth for longer than recommended and it really helped.

PurpleWithaBlueBun · 28/01/2012 19:58

great stuff!

PurpleWithaBlueBun · 28/01/2012 19:58

Link here even!

I had dry sockets when I had my wisdom teeth removed and it was utterly grim. Hope you can get sorted soon. (Why do these things always happen at the weekends when the doctor's surgery / dentists are shut)?

Grumpystiltskin · 28/01/2012 21:23

Definitely not pericoronitis. Does sound like dry socket for which antibiotics are not generally the answer. We can usually put in a dressing which helps soothe things.

Are you a smoker? Dry socket is more common in women, difficult extractions of lower teeth, those on the pill and smokers.

NHS Direct can help you locate an out of hours dentist but all A&E can usually do is give you painkillers.

OracleInaCoracle · 28/01/2012 22:49

Doctor was lovely (and very apologetic) he still seems to think its muscle damage, but to ring again tomorrow if I'm still concerned and he will see me in A+E.

Vile taste in my mouth, not blood. I don't smoke, but have quite thin blood.

I wasn't a smoker or on the pill, but I still got it. I did have one of them as a difficult extraction but both sockets became dry, so I think sometimes it is bad luck. My holes where white inside and had not healed at all. So from what you have said OP it sounds like when I had dry socket, especially with the vile taste and the intense pain. Do go tomorrow so they can have a look, I hope you feel better soon :)

aristocat · 29/01/2012 00:56

Lissie. That sounds awful, hope you are feeling better soon Smile

Grumpystiltskin · 29/01/2012 09:30

If the blood clot doesn't form properly then there is a much higher chance unfortunately so from your point abt thin blood it seems you may be more prone.

I didn't say you have to smoke/be on the pill purple just that they increase the risk. Sometimes they happen when there are no risk factors present unfortunately.

Dry sockets are traditionally described ad "exquisitely painful".

Hope you're feeling better.

gingeroots · 29/01/2012 10:04

Is difflam oral rinse available without prescription ?
Lissie you sound very brave ,I'd be weeping on the floor .
How are you today ?

PurpleWithaBlueBun · 29/01/2012 10:55

Ginger google says it is available without prescription, I had it prescribed and it costs about the same as a prescription according to google.

Grumpy the dentist thought mine may have been caused by the suction they used as I don't like the taste of blood.

OracleInaCoracle · 29/01/2012 11:03

morning all, I feel a tiny bit better today. actually, my left side feels numb. thats ok right? still have a funny taste in my mouth, but since Im not in as much pain I dont know whether to call or wait until tomorrow when its going to be a lot easier to get to hospital (one of the problems of village life - sundays are write offs)

OP posts:
OracleInaCoracle · 29/01/2012 14:36

no, it really hurts again now!!

OP posts:
OracleInaCoracle · 29/01/2012 14:36

and oddly, mouth feels hot.

OP posts:
FleetwoodandFairycakes · 29/01/2012 14:47

That's not normal - I had all four wisdom teeth out a few months ago (lower two were difficult extractions with gum cutting and stitches etc) and although I was in a lot of pain for week it was general "having my gum cut open and mouth forced apart pain". No hot mouth, no white stuff in socket, no hot cheek or numbness. Seriously get to a dentist - emergency one at the hospital? I am in London and one of the hospitals near me does an emergency dentist. Sounds like you need antibiotics. You don't want it to spread to the rest of the mouth. Sorry - not trying to scare you! Smile But better safe than sorry? Plus you're in a lot of pain! Poor you Sad

PosieParker · 29/01/2012 14:48

We have emergency NHS dentists here and a dental hospital, pain/bleeding will get you an appointment. Aren't you Bristol Lissie?

PosieParker · 29/01/2012 14:49

It's free, I believe.

OracleInaCoracle · 29/01/2012 14:54

I'm in Shropshire. He did say that he will see me today if I am still in pain, I dont want to be a hassle though and am worried that I am making a fuss over nothing/being a wimp Blush

OP posts:
aristocat · 29/01/2012 16:30

lissie. You are not being a wimp, sounds like you are in a dreadful state. Think I would see someone ASAP
(( hug))

OracleInaCoracle · 29/01/2012 17:58

Thank you, have taken even more painkillers and have decided to pop in tomorrow when the surgery is open and refuse to leave ask them to take a look. Managed to eat a small sunday lunch with the veg boiled to pulp and lots of gravy. Rinsed mouth straight after though. And made a batch of muffins that I can't even bloody eat!

OP posts:
gingeroots · 29/01/2012 20:14

Thinking of you lissie - make sure they understand tomorrow how bad it is .

chipmunksex · 29/01/2012 20:24

Don't go being all stoic.

OracleInaCoracle · 29/01/2012 20:37

Oh, don't worry, I'm going in full wailer mode! Manky taste is still there and it feels raw iykwim and throbby. I'm just worried that they'll roll their eyes at the wuss with the sore gums Blush

Ahem if they know what dry socket is they will take you seriously.
I omitted this detail previously in case it would freak you out, but my Dentist said that the reason it hurt so much is your bone starts to die! So do go tomorrow and get it sorted as it won't get better on it's own.
