My dd has got a bead from a hairgrip stuck up her nose - I have rung the doctors who are ringing me back - Is this dangerous ?
I have put my finger over her other nostril and got her to blow out but to no avail - I never saw this happen but I'm sure she's not crying wolf ( Although she does sometimes) She is quite upset - any ideas anyone???????

a & E trip i think.

Rhubarb · 20/01/2006 12:03

Not dangerous I don't think, she will hardly choke on it. Can you see it?

NotQuiteCockney · 20/01/2006 12:05

Ok ... this is a gross idea, but a friend was told it by the A+E people. Close her other nostril, and try to suck the bead out, with your mouth.

FrannytheQuinoaEater · 20/01/2006 12:05

Is there an NHS walk in centre near you? Unless you are POSITIVE (unlikely in a 2 yr old) that she can blow it out with your encouragement, ie if she knows how to blow her nose and can do it without doing a big inhalation first.

It's not dangerous at the moment in that she can breathe but you don't want to leave it any longer than you have to.

LIZS · 20/01/2006 12:07

Your practice nurse, gp or even a pharmacist should be able to do it - long handled tweezers required - unless she is very little and may need something to keep her still, that is. My db used to do this all the time when he was little with peas etc and my mum was forever at the chemist ! dd(then 3) did it with some material last summer and we went to Childrens hospital as it was a bank holiday and everywhere was shut. seh was quite upset but held very still. She won't do it again in a hurry !

SorenLorensen · 20/01/2006 12:07

Cover up her other nostril and blow into her mouth (like mouth to mouth - cover her mouth with yours). I saw this on a TV programme about hospitals once and it really works - I did it when ds1 got a piece of pasta stuck up his nose.

Mercy · 20/01/2006 12:10

Soren is right - the hospital told us to do this with dd - you must blow hard though and it may take a few attempts.

onefootinthegravy · 20/01/2006 12:20

Doctors have rang - the've said not allowed to do the tweezer thing any more - so have to go to A&E bloody miles away in Salisbury - Just rang dh is coming home early - Will try the mouth to mouth thing while I'm waiting! Thanks XX

Good luck. Have a few goes if it doesn't work at first. It's much less scary and invasive than A&E and tweezers.

onefootinthegravy · 20/01/2006 12:50

THANK YOU ALL - so much!!!!
It took me a while to calm her down, as this really scared her - she had a screaming tantrum to start with - the worst one on record I think!!
Eventually let me try it and it flew out well lubricated with all the snot and tears !!!
One bonus dh is home early!! After telling his boss she had a bee stuck up her nose!!
What was he thinking off its January!! and she'd be hard pushed to get a house fly stuck up that tiny nostril let alone a big bee!!!
What planet are men on?? (oh thats another thread)
Thanks again XXXXX

Phew! VERY relieved for you!

SorenLorensen · 20/01/2006 12:55

Yayyy! Excellent result. That's made my day

Littlefish · 20/01/2006 12:59

We had a dreadful week at school once when 3, yes 3 children stuck beads up their noses! I think the second 2 fancied a visit to the hospital after the first bead story had been circulated round the playground!

Littlefish · 20/01/2006 13:01

Where did my bold type go?

SorenLorensen · 20/01/2006 13:02

You have to do each word individually like this not like this. I really must shift my @rse off this chair...

Dingle · 20/01/2006 13:05

Oh I am so sorry, but you have really made me laugh with the bee thing!

Glad it all worked out in the end. I had to do the blow in the mouth thing with DS a few years ago, when he decided to stick a Thomas the Tank engine big loaded ball up his nose...was amazed at how easy it came out.

Misspiggy · 20/01/2006 13:11

ROFL at "bee up nose" comment...what a classic! Glad she's ok now OFITG.

anniebear · 20/01/2006 13:17

Glad all is ok, that us so funny about the bee...MEN!!!!!!!!!

pumpkin7 · 20/01/2006 13:39

Glad its all ok.

Just read the thread and it reminded me of what happened to my sister the other day. Her ds2 had been scratching the inside of his ear with a pen and the small bit on the end came off and got stuck in his ear. He had to go downstairs and explain it to his mum who promptly ROFL. Luckily they got it out because my sis would have been too embarrassed to take him to hosptital-he is 19yrs old

onefootinthegravy · 20/01/2006 14:36

Thanks for all you're replies. You've saved me probaby a 5 hour wait down a&e with miserable dd. Sooooooo glad I've found mumsnet!!
BTW dh is not amused I've let you all in on his mistake. he's 'glad you've found it all amusing' Hahahah

Mercy · 20/01/2006 14:41

Glad all is well!.

I didn't want to say at the time but I was told by the hospital that a foreign body in the nose is potentially dangerous. If the object was inhaled it could either go into the stomach or the lung, there is no way of telling which way it will go.

onefootinthegravy · 20/01/2006 19:14

Glad you didnt Mercy!! I was panicking enough as it was.

Still every cloud, after getting home and seeing me very stressed - dh has been on dd duty all afternoon, while I've had a bath and chilled, he prepared dinner and washed up, its been great. Wondering what he's after though??

So glad she was ok, I had the exact same thing about a bee when I was a nanny - the little girl came to me in tears saying "A bee has gone up my nose!" I thought a fly must have buzzed near her face and frightened her, so I tried to reassure her it was ok and that the 'bee' was not still up there. She insisted I had a look however and of course it turned out to be a bead

Mercy · 20/01/2006 19:40

let me guess: dd is fine and enjoying all the attention. You are still going over it in your head!

onefootinthegravy · 20/01/2006 20:05

A bit I suppose, but dd thinks mummys very clever for getting it out, and told be I should be a doctor!!
