Colonoscopy tomorrow

Peachmelba90 · 28/01/2012 10:26

So I'm having a colonoscopy tomorrow. Since july 2011 I had terrible diahrrea (how do you spell that word) and weight loss.

So today I get the pleasure of taking two doses of laxative. Currently sitting in my pj's monitoring every tummy gurgle and twinge. Let me tell you this isn't pleasant. I'm on my own. OH is away out walking which was fine until I actually started having to go to the loo and now I just need a hug. Feeling miserable and scared I will have an accident on my way to the hospital tomorrow. Not sure how I will cope as that is one of my biggest fears.

Has anyone had anything similar and can reassure me my insides arent going to fall out

Hi Peach, I have had a couple of these. It is a horrible couple of days, really tiring but all of the prep has normally finished long before leaving for the hospital :)

What time is your last sachet and your appt?

I always stock up on icepoles/lollies and orange jelly for the prep!

How are you feeling now?

Peachmelba90 · 28/01/2012 16:46

My last sachet was at 2.30pm so I'm going strong at the moment. The prep booklet said I can have eggs and White toast so I've had one egg and 2 slices of toast. Never thought of icepoles might get OH to get some when he gets home

My appointment is at 1.30pm tomorrow. Not allowed to eat anything past 8am tomorrow.

I'm tired now so snuggled up on the sofa with a hot water bottle.

Looking forward to tomorrow nights dinner. May I ask how long it took you to get back to "normal" whatever can be classed as normal these days

Aaaaaah- it's rotten. I've had those sachets too and wonder how much more can possibly come out!

Don't worry it will eventually stop and once you have had the investigation it will all be okay in a couple of days.

Hi, I've had a colonoscopy and endoscopy at the same time, not very pleasant at all.
I have on going bowel problems due to my spinal cord injury, and take multiple laxatives on a daily basis as well as use a peristeen. I've been in hospital several times due to severe fecal compaction, and all the strongest laxatives they give, like before surgery or colonoscopy's didn't even touch me!!! And for most they make them go so much, a huge clear out.
That's why my bowels are messed up, because they just don't work and won't empty due to nerve damage.

You have my sympathy. I had a colonoscopy a couple of years ago and the prep beforehand was the worst bit. In my case eit was just IBS and I was prescribed mebeverine to deal with it whcih did the trick. I think that knowing it wasn't anything serious helped as well.

I didn't know that colonoscopies were carried out on a Sunday, but good luck and I hope it is something that is easily remedied.

Hospital have put weekend appointments to clear the waiting list. I was lucky to get a weekend date won't need to take so much time off work.

Everything is slowing down now, not as violent TMI! hungry though, keep thinking of the biscuits in the cupboard.

I've had merberverine didn't work for me unfortunately, hoping it won't be anything serious. Keep positive

Well it's D-day or B-day as I'm calling it.

Got some sleep last night though I was up throughout the night going to the loo.

Just getting my bag ready for heading in and I'm now at the point where I can't eat or drink and I'm starving!

Deep breath!

Hi hope everything goes ok for you. I had a colonoscopy about 3 weeks ago & I have to admit the worst part was drinking the laxatives the day before. The actual procedure was ok & was over in 30 mins. I found that eating small amounts for a couple of days afterwards helped rather than a full meal even though I was starving. Thought it easier to let my stomach get used to the food again rather than bombarding it with a big meal!!!And they pump air into you during the colonoscopy so you might have quite bad wind for a day or 2 - so pleasant!!

Have you been given any indication of what is wrong? I've been diagnosed with Crohn's diease but its not in my lower bowel so I'll be having a barium meal in the next few weeks to check my small intestine.

Good luck & try to rest as much as possible when you get home.

Peachmelba90 · 29/01/2012 19:31

Hello I'm home. I'm sorry to hear you have crohns. Yes the actual procedure isn't that bad but now in a bit of pain from the cramping and probably where the biopsy was taken.

Initial signs show mild colitis. No ulcerations but I will find out if it is after the biopsy's are back.

I have had a small bowl of cereal and 2 slices of toast. It's the best thing I've ever tasted Smile

Peach I'm glad it went ok - how long before you get your results?

DP made me a bacon sandwich when I got home after mine - think I ate it in about 2 seconds I was starving!

Peachmelba90 · 30/01/2012 11:38

I think I should get the results back in about 2 weeks. Just re-read the report now I'm not so dopey and I have indeterminate colitis not intermediate. Hmmm not sure what to think. Its a bit scary now that I've had time to think about it. Mild and patchy but active. I have so many questions now.

What should I be eating, what should be avoiding, will it go away on it's own, will it get worse. I think I'd prepared myself for it being IBS.

Hi, I'm having a colonoscopy on Monday and will be starting my prep tomorrow. I have been told to take 10 Senna tablets (seems an awful lot in one go!) followed by two sachets of Picolax (at separate intervals). Is there anyone who has taken this combination, and if so, is the effect more or less the same as just taking the Picolax? Also, after the procedure I will be driven home but will I need to have someone with me once I'm home or could I just call someone if I need them? Am a little nervous (ok, a lot) as am not sure what to expect. Have started a low fibre diet today... thanks for any advice!

MaureenMLove · 17/03/2012 11:21

I haven't had one, but DH has had 3 over the years I think.

He only had the Pixolax and there was really no need for anything else - it was quite enough!

Make sure you have a pot of Sudacrem next to the toilet. I know that's probably a bit TMI, but you will be glad you listened! Wink

Good luck. If it's any consolation, DH has had that and the one down the throat and he said a colonoscopy is far less traumatic.

He didn't really need me to be at home afterwards. He was perfectly fine. I think it's just a precaution really. I'm sure a person on standby would be fine.Smile

Chatwithmeplease · 17/03/2012 11:30

@Maureen thanks very much for the advice, will keep the sudocrem by the loo...
