Fashionable/young shoes to help with Rheumatoid Arthiritis

Hi,
Im 28 and have been diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthiritis, Im struggling mainly with my feet and cant find anything comfortable footwear wise apart from Uggs to wear. All the shoes Ive seen that are designed to help have been either quite gaudy or of an older persons style.
I did see the Davina ones for Next which have just come out, they had some lovely ballerina pumps and they are designed to help with the pressure on your load bearing joints, unfortunately they werent quite wide enough and so were digging in on the sides.

Does anyone know of anywhere you can but comfortable yet fashionable shoes?

Many thanks

Flyflot (online and can send back for £1 per pair) have some styles which are OK ish. There's also a make called Gabor which John Lewis sell that are reasonably OK.

they are not the most beautiful but they are some funky styles, i have sandals trainers and boots. still buy lovely shoes because i spend most of my time in fitflops can wear flats or heals when i want to too.

ggirl · 27/01/2012 19:23

fitflops
are amazingly comfortable and most wide fit

maybe too frumpy for you though

have you tried dune for wide fit shoes

Sometimes ecco do a shoe that doesn't look too bad. I know a lot of doctors recommend them to people with diabetes.

I struggle and the advice I got from a RA podiatrist was to wear something that supports your foot across the top. Not the prettiest shoes but I feel the difference. Ballet pumps and fit flops just don't give me the support as I suffer with it in my toes. I find it really difficult to find shoes especially considering I used to live in pretty heels and now just the thought of them make my knees ache :(

Thankyou for all your help! I will definately have a look at all of those you have recommended. I am still fairly knew to all this so not sure really what I should be looking for etc. I used to buy a few pairs of £6 ballet pumps from Primark and wear those all summer really but as I know feel like im walking on rocks and glass all the time I feel I will need something a little more supportive. I have spent all winter in Ugg boots which have been a saviour although I think alot of people who dont know about my RA think I just dont ever make an effort where I did used to wear very pretty things, it does make me slightly sad!
I was so excited when I saw the Davina for Next range, admittedly although they are not designed for people with arthiritis, the middle sole which helps with your load bearing joints seemed to be the sort of thing I needed so was upset they didnt fit me anywhere!!
Has anyone had any success from insoles? I wondered whether it would be easier to buy 'normal' shoes and add a good insole?

Many thanks x

I've had some very comfy echo lace up boots. Can't wear their shoes because they are too wide, so they might be ok.
DSis has some presentable Hotter sandals she says are very comfy.

Fit flops boots are super- love the tan leather knee highs I have spent the winter wearing them - fab : )

Mephisto, Birkenstock (they do shoes as well as sandals), Ecco, El Naturalista, Think!, Josef Siebel,

Try natural shoe store, Shoon or good old Clarks. If in Scotland Rogersons shops are really good.

You do have to filter out a whole pile of old lady shoes but there are some great shoes out there. For summer I have a whole pile (3 pairs, different colours) of Mephisto Helen sandals - look pretty funky but are very supportive and comfortable. On the plus side you can get some real bargains as the natural market for these shoes (mid 50 woman IMO) don't always want red shoes with nice detailing!

cocolepew · 28/01/2012 11:43

You can buy Birenstock insoles online, here I use the birko tex ones. You can put them in any shoe then.

cocolepew · 28/01/2012 11:48

Ecco have ballet flats, they are expensive but lastforever.

MissBetsyTrotwood · 28/01/2012 18:16

I second the Birkenstock option. Also try the Natural Shoe Store. Their staff are generally very knowledgeable and it's not all lentil weavery!

I've just bought a lovely pair of Cuban heel boots from H by Hudson. Now, I can't wear heels at all but these are fab and I have walked all day in them. Lovely.
