Anyone had a vein ablated by laser?

If so please let me know what I'm in for next month...

Did it hurt? How long for? I'm breastfeeding so can't take nurofen.

My consultant says I need to walk 4 miles a day at a brisk pace. Hm with 3 DC under 3 that could be tricky!

Sorry to be ignorant, which vein do you mean?
I have only heard of pulmonary vein ablation?
Would very much like to know.

Ah, ok thanks.
Must be better than what they did years ago: slice the thigh across at the top, and try and pull the thing out.
All the best .

I had something similar done three weeks ago. Pain very bearable (though didn't realise that nurofen is contraindicated when breastfeeding, and would definitely seek out some sort of anti-inflammatory that's compatible with breastfeeding, especially for the first week or so).

The advice I received was 'A brisk walk, for 15 to 20 minutes, morning and evening'. As I'm a regular gym-goer, my consultant said to do as much as I felt able to do, and the more exercise the better the result.

The other important thing to do is to bathe and moisturise the leg twice a day. I use Bio-oil.

My veins were hideous and I'm noticing a definite improvement, though the bruising is pretty ugly at the moment!

So, in summary two reasonable walks (the mention of the evening one is so that the blood doesn't 'pool' in the treated vein as you lounge around the house at night-time, ha ha), lots of massaging with Bio-oil, and find an anti-inflammatory you can take (I used Ponstan, and didn't think I'd need it, but apparently my vein problem was 'complex', and I had snipping as well as lasar).

Best of luck!

Thank you, that's really useful stuff to know. How long do you expect the bruising to last? Would you say it's a case of looking worse before it gets better..?

Interesting about the massage too, I'll ask my consultant how to do it but I'm guessing you do it upwards?

Thanks again and I hope you're fully better very soon! Smile

Hi shrew, sorry for delay in replying. My leg is still quite bruised three weeks on, and I'm still wearing a surgicastocking.Iplan on wearing stocking until bruising 'settles down' whenever that may be! My consultant will not see anyone until six weeks after the procedure, so I'm allowing myself that timeframe before I start panicking about my leg's appearance!Grin

I would definitely say it's a case of looking worse before it gets better, though my hideously swollen and purple ankle of old now looks relatively normal Smile.

As regards the massage, I just rub the Bio-oil (E45 also recommended, though I would say the Bio-oil is better) into my leg gently, paying particular attention to the most discoloured looking areas. My consultant told me to treat the leg 'like a new-born baby' Grin.

Best of luck to you with it all!
