Bacterial Meningitis at DD's nursery

DH picked dd (7 months) up from nursery today, and the manager told him that one of the other babies was in hospital and had just been confirmed as having bacterial meningitis . Thankfully it sounds like she is recovering, responding to antibiotics etc.

She hadn't been to nursery for a week (the poorly baby), and the nursery having checked with NHS Direct, Environmental Health, Ofsted, etc etc, haven't been advised to close the baby room, or send parents of other babies to doctors etc, just to advise parents and staff what to look out for.

Its only dd's 3rd week at nursery and my 3rd week back at work, but I don't want to take her in tomorrow - am I being a neurotic mummy? I just think that by Monday, we should be past the incubation period (10 days max I believe from googling).

It has really brought home what letting them go out into the big wide world means - don't suppose I can keep her in her room till she's 20 though .

Find out what type of bacterial meningitis it is?
Pneumococcal isn't contagious but Meningicoccal can be for children in close contact.
Have a look on the meningitis research website or even give them a call, they are very good and will answer all your questions.

Glad to hear the baby is recovering well.

Are you being neurotic? Of course you are. It's trait I like best about you

Have a lovely day lounging around looking for imaginary spots. You and me both

Better to be neurotic, you can't take any chances with your children.

Not sure if you should 'lounge around looking for spots' though this is a dangerous mistake to make with meningitis. Don't think that no spots means no meningitis! my Dd1 had no spots we lost her 10 days later to pneumococcal meningitis.

Hope all is well with the baby today. x

Hi Amyjade - I am so sorry to hear about your DD , I can't even begin to imagine how you must feel. Thanks for taking the time to reply to my post!
NHS direct have said that if the local health authority thought that any of the other babies from nursery were at risk, we would have been contacted to get them onto antibiotics. I have kept her out of nursery today in any case and she is fine and shes cut her first tooth overnight (with no fuss ). So we are having a nice bonus day together.
