Please reassure me - imagination going riot

Ds has very high temperature - 39.5 - he's 4. He was quite grumpy after school today, and just wanted to watch telly, then this evening fell asleep watching Thomas. He's had Calpol and temp has come down a bit I think. Tell me this isn't anything sinister - after the meningitis stuff in the news I tend to panic, and I'm pg, and over emotional, and imagining he's going to drop down dead at any moment. He's sleeping peacefully now, still a bit hot, but not burning.

Sleeping peacefully sounds good.Keep a close eye though.
It's so hard to be rational about this stuff isn't it???

tortoiseshell · 19/01/2006 21:40

Impossible I would say moondog to be rational! He's still quite hot.

Make sure the room is cool then, and he hasn't too much on.
Look,if you're worried, you can always give NHS Direct a ring.

Do you have the number??

chapsmum · 19/01/2006 21:43

you poor soul.. it awful when their not well isnt it??can you check his temp while he's sleeoing?

DumbledoresGirl · 19/01/2006 21:43

Do you have some ibuprofen (Nurofen) too? You could give that if it is a couple of hours since he had the Calpol to try and reduce the temperature further. Does he have no other symptoms at all? You know rationally that it is most likely to be something innocent like the start of a cold, but I think it is almost inevitable that you will worry about meningitis.

Thanks guys. Yes I do have the number for NHS Direct - will wake him up in a bit and give him some Ibuprofen. He has just started coughing a little, which is relieving, because I'm coughing lots, and dd is under the weather, and if there's a reason for a temperature (like a cold) it's a bit less scary iyswim!!!!

Let us know ts.

tortoiseshell · 20/01/2006 00:35

well ds is much cooler now, doesn't seem to be running a temp. Will be relieved in the morning if all is ok, and will keep him off school.

Sorry to be panicky, I'm sure it's being pg, I just imagine the worst all the time and get VERY emotional! Thanks for reassurance!

Well he seems ok this morning - is being very sweet actually! Have kept him off school, and he's curled up watching Teletubbies with dd who is very excited about him being at home!

It's so difficult not to panic about things - when his temperature nearly hit 40 last night I was thinking all sorts of horrid things!

Glad he is OK today. FWIW one of mine used to run up massive temperatures for absolutely no apparent reason and used to halluciate with them which was really unnerving! Hasn't happened for some time now though.

moondog · 20/01/2006 14:32

Oh I'm glad too ts!
