High temperature only at night - any experience?

My DTs have both been ill for a week. One has tonsillitis and is on antibiotics but is sleeping well again now.

The other one however is fine during the day now but at night wakes up with a temperature of between 38.7 and 39.8 (high I know). WE sponge him down and get his pyjamas off. WE then end up with him sleeping with one of us for the rest of the night. This has gone on for 5 nights now. Does anyone have any experience of this = it seems strange that he only gets really ill at night and is chirpy as anything in the daytime?

14 months old by the way. Any tips gratefully received......

It does seem strange, babies in particular have poor controll over their temp. when they are sleeping this is made worse.
Any other symptoms at all?!

Are you giving Calpol in the day?

chapsmum · 19/01/2006 21:12

that is v high calpol and brufen if he can take it now!

Clayhead · 19/01/2006 21:12

AFAIK body temperature is higher at night as a rule so a temperature will be worse also.

I have had similar recently, just gave calpol/brufen and kept them cool.

harrogatemum · 19/01/2006 22:00

he had Calpol at 7 just before bed and woke at 8.30 with high temp....just dont understand it!

Calpol and Brufen 3 times a day AND antibiotics.

Ds Temperature over 40 this week-the above worked.

Thinking of you

Clayhead · 19/01/2006 22:04

If he had calpol at 7, you can give brufen now (as long as he hasn't had his 3 doses already today or another dose since 6).

harrogatemum · 19/01/2006 22:06

can you do Calpol and then two hours later do Calprofen? Doctor told me not to as should do no more than 4 doses per day.

if he can take brufen, give it. If not, usual cooling methods, if this dosent work you should seek medical advice. a wee look in his throat, in his ears etc.

whoops, only ment to say that once,

Clayhead · 19/01/2006 22:08

Calpol has paracetamol in, does calprofen? If so not both at once, only 4 doses of paracetamol in a day.

BUT you can also take 3 doses of brufen along side the paracetamol - something like baby nurofen.

harrogatemum · 19/01/2006 22:09

brill - I have bottles of everything all lined up so will do that now!!!THanks everyone.

calpfrufen, contains only brufen. when in doubt check the label. it is fine to give capol,(paracetamol) and calprofen(ibrufen) together. perhaps staggering the dose so ythat your bub gets something every 2 hours, eg calpol at 8pm brufen at 10 pm etc

chapsmum · 19/01/2006 22:14

sorry to be anal, but make sure you give no more than 4 doses calpol, and 4 doses brufen in a 24 hr period

notasheep · 19/01/2006 22:16

Exactly
