My dad who is a pharmacist stopped my mum from taking the stilbestrol she was given in the hospital when I was born (I am 44), she was in for 3 months prior to my birth. He had heard negative reports and thought it was too risky.
Anyway apparently there is an increased risk of chancer for the children of these women and indeed their grandaughters.

Dad called me to say he does not know if the doctors gave it to my mum in her previous pregnancy 2 years earlier and as a result urged me to get regularly screened for cervical cancer etc. He was also anxious my daughter is warned.

I think although it was reported in the media, it's couched in medical terms and women simply don't know it relates to them.......
here is what it says on wiki

"Follow-up studies have indicated DES also has the potential to cause a variety of significant adverse medical complications during the lifetimes of those exposed.[1] The United States National Cancer Institute recommends[2] women born to mothers who took DES undergo special medical exams on a regular basis to screen for complications as a result of the drug. Individuals who were exposed to DES during their mothers' pregnancies are commonly referred to as "DES daughters" and "DES sons".

I'm 44. I bet my Mum won't remember. She breastfed us all so I doubt she was taking anything to stop lactation. I will check though. So far all my smears have been clear and I never miss one.

I'm pretty sure that people who are affected by this are aware already. One of my friends is directly affected by this drug and has been screened on a regular basis since she was around 18, all through the NHS as part of its specific screening and testing for these children

I think the drug was given to reduce the chance of miscarriage.

Have got my midwive's hat on , stilbestrol was given to stop flow of breastmilk for mums who did not to want breast feed or whose baby had died.

My dad said he was very annoyed that the entire ward apart from my mum was given it, he raised it with the consultant at the time. He also said he has since spoken to one other girl who was near mum at the time and took it, she has not been notified.
