Is there any way I could delay the arrival of my period?

For example by the mini-pill or something? I'm a bit ignorant about these things.

I've booked a weekend in Dublin for me and DH for our wedding anniversary in Feb - our first proper weekend away since our twins were born 5 years ago, and I've just realised my period is due on the day we go, and I get very heavy horrible periods.

The weekend was supposed to be a bit of a sexfest to make up for the drought we've had recently so I'm a bit disappointed

are you on the pill now?

You can run 2 packets of the pill on so you skip a period

It would have to be the combined pill, though - the mini-pill may stop you having periods in the long run (although doesn't do it for everyone by any stretch of the imagination) but in the short term you'd be likely to have quite a bit of spotting and breakthrough bleeding which I imagine is not what you want. Combined pill should work though.

Or having another baby would do it

See the GP - they can prescribe norethisterone tablets to take starting a few days before your period us due. You can carry on taking it until you're ready for your period to start (but not for longer than two weeks) - your period will start within a couple of days of stopping the tablets.

Are there any side-effects?

It's a progestogen so probably the same as for the progestogen-only pill ... bloating, tummy ache or upset, achy breasts - but not everyone gets side effects.

Thanks - will have to weigh it up and see whether it's worth it. I'm sure DH will think it is

Well yes, he probably will!

Have a chat with the GP and see what he says anyway. There might be something else that they can give you, and he can give you the pros and cons.
