Over/Under Active Thyroid ?

Hi all

Anyone out there with over active/under active thyroid? Are symptoms the same/different for over and under active? I have googled but I think I have both!

I know I should go for a test as my mother, maternal grandmother and great grandmother all had/have thyroid funtion issues. The GP said I should go too (i'll get round to it..)

My symptoms:
Hair loss from head
Facial twitching/shakey hands
Nervousness (sick to my stomach type/anxiety)/agitated/periods of hyperactivity
Hot skin
Always feel cold
Weight loss AND weight gain
heart beat/pulse sometimes out of rhythm (scary stuff that one!!)

Anyone had similar with inept thyroid function?
Thanks

I have underactive thyroid and was lethargic, cold, depressed, haywire periods, had dry flaky skin and cracked heels. You're right that your symptoms on the Internet indicate both hyper- and hypo- thyroidism! So best thing would be to give GP a list of symptoms and get them to do some blood tests - don't think anyone on a website can sensibly diagnose you!

Thanks for the response. Wasn't looking for a diagnosis just wondered if there a middle ground with over and under active, as there is both in my family.

I don't have dry skin but very itchy in patches with raised 'welts'. I'm coming over scratchy just typing it..

The heart beat /pulse one is more normal for overactive thyroid, due to having too many hormones which can make your heart beat faster, feels like your heart is going to come out your chest. How is your sleeping ? Feeling wiped out during the day and wanting to sleep all the time (and doing so ) is an indication of underactive. Wanting to sleep and you can't at night is a sign of overactive.

Get your thyroid checked. But make sure you get free t4 as well as the TSH tested. Only getting one test is useless but some doctors don't test both so ask them.

Wot catpark said.

An FT3 would be more than useful as well, especially if there's a suggestion you might be hyper, oh and antibodies, just in case you have Hashimoto's Disease.

I'm trying to get back to my consultant at the moment - my bloods are fine, I have hyper symptoms and hypo signs. God only knows what's going on!
