Ok, so it wasn't a stroll in the park. But I wasn't too bad on saturday. Yesterday the gums started bleeding and my jaw felt a bit sore, today I feel really tired (despite having had loads of sleep) and my jaw feels like I've been punched. I'm also dribbling a lot and still bleeding a little

My chest also feel rattly.

Nothing to worry about, right?

Yes. Sorry to say.

I had mine done on a Tuesday afternoon and felt fine on the Wednesday (even went to work!), but the Thursday/Friday weren't great. It was like on the Wednesday my jaw was in shock and then it kicked in on the Thursday.

Wasn't too bad by the weekend though. Paracetamol and ibuprofen were fine for me (interspersed).

Flyingoutofcontrol · 23/01/2012 12:34

Oh and if you are worried, speak to your dentist and/or doctor.

Bumply · 23/01/2012 12:49

Did they give you precautionary anti-biotics? If so they can make you feel a bit low as well.

OracleInaCoracle · 23/01/2012 12:55

Thank you. I was feeling ok saturday. A bit iffy yesterday and today I feel bloody horrendous. No antibiotics but on heavy duty painkillers.

Dh is taking tomorrow off work to look after me. Even my bloody cheekbone hurts!

I felt like my face had been hit by a bus for ages after having mine out.
My chest was sore too as I remember.

Plenty of rest and pain killers.
A chance for some duvet days I think.

Definately took me longer to get over than having a baby. I felt awful for at least a week. Turned out there was a tiny bit of bone left in the hole, so do back to dentist if you think it seems worse than it should!

RatDesPaquerettes · 23/01/2012 17:21

I looked like Bugs Bunny for 2 weeks after mine were removed. It was agony and I thought it would never get better. My Mum is convinced that it was due to the fact I did not keep the ice packs around my jaw for long enough.

Having said that, I would be a little bit concerned about your bleeding so if it is still bleeding tomorrow, I would recommend getting in touch with your dentist.

OracleInaCoracle · 23/01/2012 17:34

Thanks, its not bleeding a lot. Just enough for me to taste it. The op itself was pretty straightforward (under GA) but I feel dreadful. Not just in pain, iykwim.

If you are not in pain from the sockets I wouldn't worry. Rest up. Drink plenty of fluids and eat what you can. Don't touch the sockets with anything even if food is stuck. If you have been told to rinse do so very gently and no more than 2 x a day. Take ibuprofen if you can, and paracetamol if you can't.

You have my sympathies!! I had two out at the end of October, with IV sedation. I was super scared about the actual procedure, but that turned out to be fine(ish)! The next day I was still drowsy and bleeding, but not in as much pain as I though. However, the rest of that week was a different story- very stiff jaw, couldn't sleep on that side and continued bleeding. Salt water rinse as often as possible- I'm talking 6 or 7 times a day and keep topped up with painkillers- I found Cuprofen to be the most effective. That sort of pain lasted for over a week, watch out for a nasty taste as that is a sign of infection apparently. Don't drink with a straw (as tempting as it is!) and lay of the wine, as that can encourage dry socket. You might also find that you're left with a sore and boney lump near the extraction site- this is the gum/scar tissue mending back together and apparently completely normal. Mine has only just gone. Also had some sharp bits of bone fragments work their way out of the hole last week!! Good luck!! Stock up on mash, choc milkshake, smoothies and other such slop!! Smile

Yes, alcohol is not great for healing, but mostly in the first 24 hours as it promotes peripheral vasodilation (widening of small blood vessels) and therefore bleeding. The biggest factor in a socket infection is smoking. If you are a smoker, unless you give up 6 weeks before the procedure, you are at much higher risk of dry socket. Even if you cannot give up, the less you smoke immediately before and after the better.

Dry socket means an absence of a clot in the socket. Excessive rinsing before the clot is stable will cause the clot to be lost and may cause a dry socket. That is why I always tell patients not to rinse for 24 hours, and tell smokers 48 hrs. After that 2x a day is sufficient. Pain from the socket should be getting better rather than worse at 3 days, pain that starts on or suddenly gets worse 2-3 days after the procedure, especially if accompanied by a grim smell or taste warrants another trip to the dentist. Following a complex extraction (this may include wisdom teeth), pain in the jaw, neck etc may reach a peak some time after the procedure (as long as a week) and occasionally persists for many weeks. I does settle though.

bonzo77 · 23/01/2012 20:49

Oh, if you are rinsing 6-7 times a day you are likely to loosen the clot. You will see it in what you spit out. You will then think you are bleeding. I used to get people coming back with this a lot till I was clearer with my post op instructions.

Hattie23 · 23/01/2012 20:59

I found buscopan really helped with the pain too.

sodapops · 23/01/2012 21:07

It could be the painkillers that are making you feel tired and iffy.

Hope you get better soon.xx

OracleInaCoracle · 23/01/2012 21:19

Thank you am a non-smoker and have been rinsing with salt water 2-3 times a day. I can't take anti-inflamms and am on 30/500 cocodomol (I have skeletal problems so I take 15/500 regularly anyway. I think I just fooled myself into thinking "that was easy" when really, I was still v numb.

lissielou - are you feeling better today? I hope the bleeding has stopped at least.

OracleInaCoracle · 25/01/2012 16:44

Started bleeding again and jaw is very stiff today. I've reduced the painkillers in a desperate attempt to feel normal again, but I feel dreadful. Thank you though Grin

RatDesPaquerettes · 25/01/2012 18:05

mmmm... Have you been in touch with your dentist or the place where the op took place, for some reassurance? Or possibly NHS Direct for some advice as to whether the bleeding is normal?
