To ask how much training a GP would have?

Can anyone tell me how many hours/days/weeks training a GP would have before using a dermatoscope?

I'm hoping it's going to be a lot but a friend has told me that it is just a few hours - I really hope this is not the case but can someone please tell me?

Not sure exactly - but when my Dad trained in medicine, the procedure was "Watch one, do one, teach one." That was a while ago though.

Enough. And more than you.

What is a Dermatoscope?

What paranoid said. You sound over anxious.

catsareevil · 22/01/2012 13:41

Do you have a particular concern?

Any training in how to use a dermatoscope would obviously be on the back of a medical degree and postgraduate training and experience.

iggly2 · 22/01/2012 13:45

I worry about GP training but then DH is a doctor and I have seen the exam papers. At med school some of the training was worryingly basic.

Terpsichorean · 22/01/2012 13:47

YouOldSlag - if being misdiagnosed with cancer due to the misuse or incorrect reading of a dermatoscope is being over anxious, then yes I suppose I must be over anxious...

Fair enough

It takes three to six hours of use to understand the basics of a dermatoscope and to get some results. After initial training, continued practice is needed to further improve the ability to diagnose correctly and quickly using a dermatoscope. However, a dermatoscope can be an invaluable aid for almost all dermatologists. Potentially, this small equipment item can save lives and as such it is a valuable investment.
