Would you have a filling with a cold sore on the lip?

I'm due to have a filling in a back tooth tomorrow and have a cold sore on the same side.
Would it be ok to go ahead or wait until its gone?

Going on my own experience, I would say, to be on the safe side, ring the dentist tomorrow morning and tell them you have a cold sore.

I know that my current dentist will not see a patient with a cold sore, and my last one wouldn't either. It's happened to me many, many times and I've had to reschedule.

I won't generally treat patients who have coldsores. They are extremely contagious and when we do fillings it generates an aerosol of water droplets, ny of which may have virus particles in. If these get into your eye they can cause serious complications including blindness. Depending on what sort of filling it is it is sometimes possible to use a rubber dam which isolates the tooth and prevents the coldsore being open to the water.

Definitely phone the dentist and check.

I didnt realise it could be so serious. Thank you Grumpy and RockinD I will phone first thing and reschedule. Not just me at risk then but the dentist too.
