the mini-pill is fine for more mature ladies (like me! - also 38). I am considering the mirena coil as a longer term alternative

Your hubby does indeed need to go and see his GP, then he will be referred to a clinic where they will ask very searching and difficylt questions. He will not get the operation if he is not 100% sure he wants it, so tread carefully. It took me about 2 years of gentle hints.. and there is a 9 month waiting list in Edinburgh!

Panadbois · 20/01/2012 12:34

No gentle hints here! DH didn't want any more children, and like you OP, I had put drugs into my body for 20 years as contreception. I gave him three months warning that I was no longer happy to keep up with injections (37th birthdday) and then told him we'd use codoms if he didn't want to go for the snip.

It didn't take long and I'm still really surprised how easy it was to convince him.

If he's that reluctant to have the snip - however much you're justified in feeling that it's 'his turn' - you could consider having your tubes tied as a permanent solution.

FWIW DH had a snip 9 years ago after DC2 was born and has never regretted it - it certainly hasn't affected our sex life in any way apart from positively, knowing that we don't need to consider contraception at all. Like Panadbois I told DH that the only alternative would be condoms and that was enough of a turn off for him to be happy about the vasectomy.

How about not using the word 'hubby'? He's finding the discussion emasculating enough as it is.

GP talked it through with me, gave me some leaflets, and arranged an appointment with an external clinic (although still free on NHS). They also sent more detailed info ahead of the appointment.

Thanks girls dont get me wrong id never force him to do something he's uncomfortable with its just a thing we've been dicussing we were just trying to find a permenant solution and i dont really want to have more pills etc but if he really doesnt want it i will do something i just wanted abit of info about having the procedure done .
Belfast bloke 'hubby' is something i say to him all the time a term of endearment rather than a condesention !!!he has no problem with it :) and of course i understand his feelings with him it has more do with having the procedure done rather than losing his manhood !!
Thanx for the advice will look into it

Dont see why he's reluctant. After we had dc we decided no more and as dw had done all the chemical crap so far it was mu turn. No brainer,
Went to see gp. Two weeks later got letter from clinic asking me to ring for appt to see specialist. Rang that day , got appt for three weeks later, would have been one week but I wanted op on a friday.
Op was unbelievably quick and easy. All over in 20 mins, one quick mildly painful jab and all done. walked out of clinic with no problem and could happily have gone back to work next day. No discomfort at all. Purple plums for a fortnight and long wait for all clear after samples eight weeks later.
So easy, so quick.
Just tell him to grow a pair then get them removed.
