Anyone been sedated at the dentist????

Hi,

I recently visited the dentist for a few fillings, had numerous injections to numb the area but I could definitley still feel her drilling.

My dentist has suggested being sedated (I suffer from anxiety so she said that the amount of adrenaline my body is producing is washing away the effects of any injections she's giving me so it will never get numb??).

Anyway I'm now getting worried about being sedated, will it really work and I won't feel ANYTHING?......i just can't take the pain of the dentist.....I'm so nervous!!

Please tell me your experiences

I haven't personally but we had to do this for DS who was 9 at the time and had developed dentist phobia after a rather traumatic extraction
He needed more teeth taken away to make room for the others, so we booked him in for the semi sedation. He was absolutely fine, and rather hilarious while under the influence!
Be prepared for that fact that you might say some strange things while you are semi out of it!

How about hypnosis? DS2 is a 3rd yr Dental student and has just been taught it Shock

DH has had it twice for a severe dental phobia to have an extraction and some fillings. It was pricey but worth it, he only has one clear memory of the procedure but lost the best part of the days he was sedated. It went so smoothly he can now go to the dentist with minimal anxiety and has had a filling and injection since without sedation.

I have had to be, as I pass out if they try and inject my gums Blush. You'll need someone with you, and thankfully you won't remember the odd looks you get as you are man handled to the car afterward swaying like a drunk, but your helper will Grin

Mostly I have managed without an injection full stop, I just have to but up with the pain Sad

Are you talking about general anaesthetic or just something to make you dopey?
I have had general anaesthetic in the chair and at the hospital (once for all 4 wisdom teeth). It went absolutely fine. However, it is dangerous. In fact, and I don't wish to be overly dramatic but it's a fact; it is life endangering, and best saved for real surgery if you ever need it. After general anaesthetic I found it took a week until I felt back to myself again. I would probably feel safer having general anaesthetic in a hospital where they have the staff and means to save my life in case something went wrong.
If you go for it, +1 on the helper, you'll need someone to help you get home and keep an eye on for 24hrs or at least overnight. Hope you find a good solution x

Thank you all for your replies.
kittydinner it's just sedation so not out completely, dentist said I will not remember anything

mumof3teens I've tried hypnosis for my anxiety and it didn't help at all unfortunately!!

I think I'll just have to go for it, my tooth is now starting to hurt and I do not want a full on toothache!...I've made an appointment for next Friday for a consultation, so fingers crossed

I have had sedation three times, without any problem at all. DH fetched me afterwards, poured me into the car and put me on the sofa under a duvet each time. I didn't feel any sensations at all during treatment - in fact, wasn't aware of anything at all. It did make me sleepy for about 24 hours, so don't plan anything strenuous afterwards.

Go for it! Good luck OP.

I have been sedated for an extraction.Ever since being a teenager I can feel pain when a tooth is extracted with injections. My previous dentist did not believe me but the one I am at now does, and has told me it is possible to feel pain despite the injections.I was so relieved at being believed,as I have had other surgery under local and know the difference between sensations and pain

I was terrified very nervous that I would feel the pain under sedation, and not be able to make them aware of it.

But it was fine! I was aware of nothing!

I would definately have it done again. It was honestly like going to sleep, then waking up again and it was all done.Afterwards I was semi aware that I was talking crap (nothing unusual there then Grin) and I felt very tired and needed a sleep.I definately did need someone with me for 24 hours, and I certainly couldn't have looked after the kids,so arrange some help.

I can definately sympathise with you,and I hope it works out well Smile

countessbabycham - I can totally understand where your coming from, my dentist didn't believe that I could feel pain after having about 6 injections and only took me seriously when I explained about my anxiety issues.

I was terrified very nervous that I would feel the pain under sedation, and not be able to make them aware of it. - This is EXACTLY my fear and I'm so glad you've put my mind at rest.

Thank you all

I also get sedation and have done so for years. It's great. Firstly you get a small needle into the back of your hand. Try to be warm as it makes it easier. The needle only feels like a scratch. Then you just drift off to sleep. Dentist tells me I'm not knocked out. You don't feel any pain. Then you will be aware of him waking you. On 1 occasion I could feel him working on me but I was too relaxed/sedated to care. You can't drive but after a good sleep you'll be fine. I need less sleep now to get over it than I used to. I'm a big baby but it's fine. Wish I has some of the sedation at home sometimes.

CumpyGrunt · 21/01/2012 02:38

I've had sedation dentristry as well & it's fab.

Last thing I remember is the dentist making small talk & saying this will sting a bit, as they jabbed my hand.

Next thing I remember DP was escorting me from the Dentist' minus 2 wisdom teeth Smile

How much does the sedation part cost?

My 6'4", 15 stone husband had sedation (Midazolam) for root canal treatment. I went to pick him up and the dental nurse was taking out the cannula while he wittered on about it being time they got on with it. He giggled helplessly when we told him it was finished. I then had to get him to the car which was parked up a hill. Cue me, 5'6" and 8 stone, holding on to his belt and supporting him as we zig zagged along, him still giggling like a very large toddler. He denies any of this ever happened!
Daisycat22 - it will be fine.

Thanks Oldbag.

I haven't read the whole thread.

I have had sedation and I totally didn't feel anything. To tell the truth I went to sleep I was so relaxed and only came round in the recovery area. I would highly recommend sedation if you are that anxious about the dentist. My anxiety came about after having braces and having to be held down while they were ripped out at the end of the treatment.
