Virus in kids - HELP!

I know this is probably nothing but its driving me to distraction. My twins have been ill since Saturday morning. They are 14 months old. They have runny noses, dreadful coughs, are off their food and one of them is constantly crying and clinging to me. They also have temperatures at night time but not during the day, even up to 40 degrees. I took them to the doctors on Monday who told me it was a virus and that I should just keep dosing them up on Calpol. However its now WEdnesday and they arent getting any better. Can someone please give me some advice about their own experiences with this and how long it will last - I dont know whether to take them back to the doctors and even if I watned to its a logistical nightmare on my own!!!!!

Ibruprofen can be taken as well as calpol and is very good at getting temps down. Can you phone your doctor rather than taking them in so you can tell him they do not seem to be improving. There is a lot of this going around at the moment and I would say most of the kids, including mine, have ended up with antibiotics on the second visit.

It will be OK but they are young and the doctors around here are always happy to see youngsters. They mostly understand the mothers concern. I've only talked to once doctor who didn't

Oh Harrogatemum, try not to worry. It sounds like it is under control, (ie not getting worse) even if it is not getting better yet.

" points, maybe not what you are after, but hopefully of some help:

Firstly, you can ring your GP and ask them if they think you should go back in. They have knowledge of the local bugs and viruses and should know how long they last in children your LO's ages.

Secondly, make a mental note to do as I do in future: I never ever leave the GP's room without saying "How long shall I let this condition continue before coming back?" because it is very common for me to get reassurance on the spot, but them to be worrying days later because I don't know if my child should still be ill or not.

Weatherwax · 18/01/2006 12:24

Does the crying come with anthing? Is your LO holding onto their ear or anything?

Lonelymum · 18/01/2006 12:25

That should say 2 points...

Hi

Just wanted to give you some sympathy and share my own experience. My DD, who is 16 months, had a viral thing a couple of weeks back where she had high temps, (up to 39.8)for a total of 5 days and was also really clingy. She eventually started being sick after a few days and that lasted a whole 24 hours. Took her to GP who said, yes her ears were a bit red inside, throat was slightly red and her glands were up but again, was viral and nothing he could give us other than advice to use the Calpol/Nurofen method of bringing down temps and push fluids. Thankfully she improved shortly afterwards but the whole thing last about 5-6 days before she started to resemble her wee self again.

With the temps being high at night, are you keeping them very lightly dressed? I kept my little one in just her nappy with a thin blanket over her when the temp dipped later in the night and that seemed to help. Tepid baths are sometimes recommended to, (as opposed to cold ones) or sponging with a tepid flannel. And of course a cough bottle, but I'm guessing you'll be doing that already as a concerned mum.

Sorry there's not much else I can offer other than the above and big hugs, especially when you've got two little darlings ill at the same time. My heart goes out to you.

Hope they improve soon.

thank you all for your words of wisdom. They have just refused all lunch and are just constantly crying and clinging. I just redosed them on Calpol so will see if that takes effect. I am going to ring the doctors this afternoon. It makes it worse because I am supposed to be at work and this is my 3rd day off and i dont know how much longer work will be understadning....isnt it awful tat i am even worrying about work.

If work start putting pressure on you, just say that you have the virus too now. That should take some pressure off you.

Your LOs won't want to eat if they have a temperature. Don't look upon that as another symptom - that is the result of the temperature. Just try the fluids and ring the GP. They sound bad enough to warrant it IMO.
