Ds seems to have 'hammer toes' - anyone any experience?

Ds is 3 and his 2nd toe on each foot is definitely curled under. My dad has quite pronounced hammer toes, which were unsuccessfully treated when he was young (many years ago!).

Does anybody have more recent experience of correcting this?

I didn't know it could be corrected! I have hammer toes myself.

My dad had his toes broken and then bandaged with aluminium splints sticking out the front. He was about 7, and when he rode his bike the splints would bend, so he just bent them back agan!

Apparently dad's toes got him rejected by the police force and teh Royal Marines. I always thought he wanted to teach PE!

I have them too, but only slightly.

Maybe mine aren't too bad either.

Is your ds due a health check at all? You could always ask about his toes then?

dd3, 21 months, has crossing 2nd and 3rd toes. we thought it might go as she got more used to walking but it hasn't changed, it might need correcting sometime. is that like hammer toes?

hewlettsdaughter · 18/01/2006 10:28

Hello again Fennel! That sounds different to me. My second toes widen out and curl under quite a lot.

purpleturtle · 18/01/2006 10:30

ds isn't due a check AFAIK, hence the straw poll to try to decide whether I need to take him to the doc.

don't think crossing toes are hammer toes. Hammer toes stick up at the knuckle - can cause a problem if they rub on your shoes.

Well, only you can decide - but if it was me, I'd probably wait until I had to take him for something anyway, then mention it then.

hewlettsdaughter · 18/01/2006 10:36

But if you're worried about it, don't do what I'd do.

purpleturtle · 18/01/2006 10:42

I've already waited over 18mths to mention something else 'next time I have to take him'! I'm more worried that I'm not particularly worried about his toes. That angst that I'm not a good mother...

tbh I hadn't even noticed his toes. It was dh who brought it up.

Well, if it's not affecting his walking then it can't be too bad can it... but I'm no expert.

Speak to the GP and s/he will either reassure you or refer you.
