DH has rash on forehead, red & angry, then peels. Then repeat! What is causing it?

DH has a rash/sore area on his forehead near his eyebrows. First it gets really red and angry looking and then it peels. Then it happens again. Does anyone know what might be causing it?

We use fairy non bio gel for all his clothes and all the bedding he comes into contact with. I wash some of the kids clothes in ariel actilift but this is because they are stained and it gets the stains out. If it was either of these washing things causing the rash, why would it only be on his forehead and not on any other part of his body. It would seem strange for his body to be covered with clothes and not have any rashes where the clothes have been.

My mum thinks that it is an ingredient in the Head and Shoulders shampoo that DH uses. He has been using this for years.

The only other products that come into contact with his skin are:

  1. baby soap (used by whole family) - again we have all used for years
  2. unperfumed deoderant, used by him and me - again we have all used for years

He has an electric shaver so doesn't get wet/use foam and also doesn't wear any aftershave/anything like that.

Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated!

It sounds a little bit like a psoriasis plaque, where the dead skin accumulates and peels, and grows again, but mine doesn't usually get to what you'd describe as red and angry.

I have googled psoriasis plaque and in the pictures, it looks like the red skin has white scaly bits over it. DH's doesn't quite look like this, it is just totally red and raw with no marks or other colours on it, it just looks totally red and raw. Then, it peels off, looking rather like a load of dandruff has been thrown at it. I will keep reading about the psoriasis and see if I can see more pictures that look like DH's. Thanks for your post.

Mm. Mine can look red and raw if I have (yuck) peeled off the top layer, but yes, there is usually flaky skin on top, unless it's kept very well moisturised.

shingles?

gardenplants · 19/01/2012 14:20

Now googled shingles pictures and those mainly look like a collection of spots - on DH, the skin has no spots, it is a patch that is uniformly red and very angry looking. The patch is maybe 8cm across so pretty big.

Yes, I was going to say sebhorric dermatitis. I have it - on the sides of my nose, but if I don't keep treating it, it spreads across my cheeks, to my eyebrows, and to my forehead. When I first got it I seemed to be able to control it with Eucerin, but these days only Daktacort will do, which is a steroid cream and has to be got on prescription. GPs would keep warning me that I couldn't use it long term, as steroids are bad for the facial skin, but nothing else worked. Eventually I saw a GP who was also a skin specialist, and he told me it was OK to keep using the daktakort. I only use a tiny bit on the sides of my nose, every day, and if I miss it for a day or two, it starts to spread. The ointment is better than the cream.

Was this SD in the end and did he manage to treat it?
