Skribble · 17/01/2006 21:07

I am due to get teeth out tomorrow under sedation and I have lost the advise sheet, so i am not sure about eating and if its Ok to have vodka tonight to steady the nerves.

Plus what does it actually feel like?

i have had one out with just an injection and it was fine! i could feel them pulling my mouth around, but no pain at all

Skribble · 17/01/2006 21:16

Lucky you , the last one i had out was terrible, so the dentist suggested sedation. I never used to bother going but it was horrific. My teeth are so sensitive that even the cold water/ air is agony, my lips always split and my clicky jaw aches, so add to that a wisdom tooth and a huge molar getting pulled out you can safely say I a crapping it.

Sedation is not the same as general anaesthetic so you can eat and drink, however I wouldn't recomend drinking alcohol tonoght. A sedative can make you feel really out of it/queasy etc. I would recommend a good nights sleep and have the vodka in 24hrs or so (in moderation) once the tooth is out. Also if you have time prior to your appointment but some arnica to aid healing.

mumatuks · 17/01/2006 21:34

Hi Skribble,

I can't remember the recommendations, but I had a tooth out under sedation and I was fast asleep!!!

They told me I'd be aware of what was going on but not care (like a good night out?!)
Anyway as I said I was completely zonked. Must be something to do with being a mum, I took advantage of the time to sleep!

Oh should also add, I felt a bit disorinated afterward, apparently I kept asking DH the same question (sounds like a night out!) Was feeling myself by about 3pm (went in at about 10.30am)

Hope it all goes well for you, but please don't worry!!

Skribble · 17/01/2006 21:40

OK I will only have one drink just now, I wasn't sure about eating, but if I don't have breakfast i will end up with a bad migraine.

So basicly I will feel pissed, as long as I don't wake up in a strange house with a table flower arrangement in one hand and a traffic cone in the other and a suspicious smell of vomit oh the memories. Best steer clear of shopping trollies too, unless DH wants to race me.

LOL!! I feel like we may have met at some point Skrib! They sound like my kind of night out!

Good Luck! Let us know how you get on. x

Skribble · 17/01/2006 22:12

The worst was when I woke in a very flowery bed in a pink room and thinking oh no i didn't did i .

I am going in soon to have 2 wisdom teeth removed under sedation. I am very nervous, but Dh had teeth removed under sedation a few years back, and he doesn't even remember getting home, or going upstairs and sleeping for hours. LOL. So I hope I am like that....

mumatuks · 17/01/2006 22:29

I'm so scared of the dentist I hadn't been for 8 years (eek!) Anyhow, when I had my tooth out, the dentist said to me that if I was scared of fillings I could even have them done under sedation!! I didn't, I just went to a regular dentist, then one of the fillings fell out, and when I went to have it done again she drilled before it had gone numb, like you Skribble, my teeth are so sensitive even to the water and air sucky thingy. I'm not going back now! I'll have to go to the other one who offers sedation.

Please don't worry about the sedation either of you, I can't remember anything about it. I said to DH about 10 times "how long was I in there" and then it was only after we got home I said to DH "I don't remember coming home.. did you drive?!" (well duh, like he would've let you!!)

Sorry for rambling..

Skribble · 17/01/2006 22:36

Thanks and thanks, I haven't been to the dentist for years after the last tooth extraction ended up with him crushing the tooth and pulling it out bit by bit. MIL recomended him and everyone thought the dentist was fine.

MIL moved to a new dentist and was so surprised at the difference, so I went. They are all quite young and obviously had more recently trained. I am getting two fillings replaced as well and the dentist thinks this will help with the sensitivity.

So can I eat before I go???????

OP posts:
Meanoldmummy · 17/01/2006 23:50

I wouldn't eat too close to the sedation because the anaesthetic can make you sick. It's a good idea to have a decent breakfast some time beforehand I think.

I worried myself silly for months and put up with horrific, tortuous toothache because the thought of having it extracted made me physically ill with fear ....and I am not a wuss, I have had two long 'orrible labours!!! It will be over so quickly and cause you so little discomfort you will wonder what you were ever worried about. Honestly.

sparklymieow · 17/01/2006 23:52

when my Ds has had sedation for his Botox injections, he can eat up to 4 hours before

Skribble · 17/01/2006 23:54

Oh I hope so, my appointment is 11.15 so maybe abit of toast, i have a bit of a vomit phobia but trying not to think about that.

I was worried that i would be too out of it to say ow that bloody hurts stop that. Its not an irrational fear that I have it is perfectly rational to not want to pay loads of money for someone to cause you great pain .

OP posts:
Skribble · 17/01/2006 23:56

Night night then .

OP posts:
Meanoldmummy · 17/01/2006 23:56

I promise you, it isn't like that...they're not going to paralyse you and then torture you. All dentists would have broken noses if they did that. It's like gas and air in labour only even better

sparklymieow · 18/01/2006 00:00

good luck and let me know what its like please, I am crapping meself about having mine done.

mumatuks · 18/01/2006 09:17

Just wanted to say good luck Skribble, you'll be fine! I promise!

p.s buy some cordosyl mouth wash (they might even sell it at thje dentist) Its not got alcohol in and will help the extract area heal.

thinking of you!

Skribble · 18/01/2006 23:10

Well it wasn't that bad actually the first thing was having a blazing row with DH. He had taken the day off to run me there and all of a sudden he has hi jacket on about 1 hr early sayiong oh I am going to se BIL and going on about the car. I lost the plot and cried all the way there, arrived all puffy and red, they must have thought I was relly upset about coming.

Anyway, he checked my teeth then I got the injection and must have fell asleep. I don't remember any injections and I must have had a shitload as the whole bottom of my face was numb. I felt a cracking sensation and a bit of tugging but drifted off again quite happily. Next I knew I was wheeled into a recovery room, I was with it enough to ask if I could rinse out my mouth and she went to get DH.

I would recomend wearing a dark top, take a bottle of water and lots of tissues. I drooled and slavered all the way home. Went to bed and woke up about 6pm. Hed some soup and bread now and feel OK now that I have control of my lips again .

I didn't feel woosy or drunk or dizzy just really sleepy, it felt like that dozing that mums do in the afternoon in front of the telly where you know if baby cries or the phone rings you will hear it and jump up.

I meant to sat the worst thing not the first thing.

OP posts:
sparklymieow · 18/01/2006 23:12

glad it went ok, I hope I do that same

Meanoldmummy · 19/01/2006 08:34

Well done Skribble, especially for not chickening out ater your dh was such a git. He was probably just nervous for you, you know what idiots men are.....

Skribble · 19/01/2006 16:45

All he could say that he wasn't bothered going for the snip, I tried to explian that I was in such a state because of him and that I was not a jibbering wreck just because of the dentist. Its a bit like that once a month when he thinks he has a free rein to wind me up and blame it on my hormones.

Anyway got the mouth wash and managed to eat some soft chicken for lunch.

OP posts:
Meanoldmummy · 19/01/2006 17:32

At least it's over

I would make dh's life miserable for at least a week now if it was me...but then, I am a notoriously nasty person!!!

mumatuks · 19/01/2006 20:31

Glad to hear it went well Skribble!

Sorry didn't check earlier have been busy, but I did think about you this morning when I saw the clock at 11.20!
