Does anyone else suffer from something like this? (hip related and a bit long)

A couple of years ago I was on holiday, lounging around watching TV with my legs crossed (like the kids sit on the floor) and when I came to rise, I had an immense pain in my right hip that meant I couldn't bear weight on my leg or lift it from the floor. After a few minutes of attempting to move I gave in, sat back down and a couple of minutes later it was as if it had never happened.

It reoccured a few times over the next few months. If I stood after sitting funny then I couldn't stand on or lift my leg, but if I sat down and stood up agian it would be fine.

I went to the doctors who took blood tests and gave me an xray. They found some sponldilitis in my back (so THAT expains the recurring backache!) but nothing wrong with my hip.

It has been quiet and caused no problems for another year or so. A few months ago I started to feel that my hip joint is a bit 'tight' and not as flexible as it used to be. If I twist and pivot on my right foot it twinges. When getting intimate with my OH I have to be v careful to avoid pain in the hip. When I get up from sitting in my chair I feel like a right old lady (I'm not 40 yet) and I can't extend my leg behind me as you naturally do when you walk until I've eased into it with a few steps.

And just this weekend I've had a few occasions of the old problem. I got off the bed this morning and fell in a heap on the floor as my leg couldn't hold my weight. When I lay back down in bed I couldn't extend my leg flat without feeling a lot of tension in the hip joint.

I don't want to go back to the doctors as they found nothing last time. I'm also a stone over a healthy weight and am sure they will put it down to that. I'm working on the diet and will return to the GP if it does continue too long but was wondering if any MNetters had any experience of this at all?

My only experience of hip problems was when I was 6
I had perthais which is where the hip joint crumbles
I know you can get this later in life (and will probably have to have a hip replacement when I'm older)
Maybe worth asking to be checked for something similar?

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 15/01/2012 23:08

I'd say it sounds like arthritis were it not for the fact it comes and goes. I know I feel like a stiff old lady (I'm 48), since starting with the painful hip last summer.
I'd go back to the gp.
Mind you, if it is arthritis they're not likely to do much beyond tell you tobtake anti-inflammatories and take (non-specified) exercise. You might be able to get a physio referral to learn ineffectual stretches and stuff.

DollyTwat · 15/01/2012 23:12

Sorry realised my post might have scared you. I'm sure it's not perthais, it is my only experience of hip problems.
Agree with shotgun it is probably a bit of artheritis

HarrietJones · 15/01/2012 23:12

I get that. Started after SPD and they just class it as left over damage now. I've had X-rays but nothing shows up.

thenightsky · 15/01/2012 23:16

Is this in your hip (outside) or more your groin? - like your right leg is a bit dislocated?

mumblechum1 · 15/01/2012 23:20

My hips hurt like crazy now that I've started doing a bit of running (only about 5k on the treadmill), and the trainer said the best thing to do is strengthen the adductor and abductor muscles. There are weight machines for both in the gym, but if you go to physio I'm sure they'd be able to advise

Essentially, my trainer said that because I'm not used to running, the bones are being held in a sort of saggy cradle of under used muscles and tendons, and the first thing to do is strengthen them in order to support the joints properly.

MitchierInge · 15/01/2012 23:21

marking my place

have some sort of mysterious hip disorder but seems to hurt constantly, except for first thing in the morning

I am definitely quite old though, nearly 41! :)

2kidsintow · 15/01/2012 23:23

I had a bit of SPD (very, very mild - just felt like I was saddle sore after walking) and have wondered if it is anything to do with that. It took a few weeks after my second before I could walk without a deep ache.

If I twist, it twinges in my groin more that my outer hip. When it feels tight the pain is very deep. I would explain it EXACTLY as feeling like my hip is slightly dislocated and that when I sit down and stand back up it is in the right place again.

I've developed something similar in pregnancy, which could be to do with tendons and hormones (physio thinks so, would be good as will go afterwards) or could be bursitis - inflammation of fluid sacs in the hip joint - due to extra weight (GP thinks so, also says it should go afterwards and can then be treated with painkillers or steroid injections if not).

It's quite acute if I sit unevenly, especially with legs bent, I then can't place weight on that leg and limp around for a bit. I've cut weight-bearing exercise and am finding swimming (no breaststroke), gentle walking and pilates good.

south345 · 16/01/2012 06:11

I get this currently waiting to be referred to specialist, every do often my hip feels like its popped out of the joint for a bit, worst time I was riding a bike and couldn't walk home! Mind started after SPD too, also in my shoulders so had arthritis test which came back clear.

RollerCola · 16/01/2012 09:47

I get something a bit like this too and it does come and go. At the moment it's not there but it does sort of lock sometimes. And it takes a while to 'get it going' if I've been sat down.

Have you tried an Osteopath or chiropractor? They're good for those type of things. I didn't think about it being SPD linked but I did have that with both children.

Catsmamma · 16/01/2012 09:58

oh i have weird hips too!

often if i walk up a slope in the wrong heels, it feels all tight, like a twangy elastic band, and then I cannot lift that leg, or weight bear on it, which makes it very entertaining trying to get up the two steps to the front door.

...it passes if I can stretch out the leg.

Also I cannot pull off my own boots, something about the angle of lifting the foot so my hand can pull down and try to pull up with my leg, gives me a feeling like there is a knife trying to pry open the joint.

AND if i do the tree thing for yoga my hip will almost always click as I splay the leg.

It also clicks doing other ahem activities.

It doesn't ache or cause pain except for those few situations.

2kidsintow · 16/01/2012 18:06

Phew. Weirdly, although I am no closer to an answer, it makes me happy to find out I am not alone. Lots of these sound really similar.

My consultant said he had never heard of it , can people go & see him please.

mylittlepeanut · 17/01/2012 18:27

Google Hip Impingement, i started getting symptoms very similar to the ops a couple of years ago and after a year of seeing consultants and having physio I was finally diagnosed with hip impingement which for me was when where the hip ball was tearing the ligaments in the hip socket. I had surgery in 2009 which seemed to work however I have started to get pain in the joint again over the last couple of months.

2kidsintow · 17/01/2012 20:19

Well, decision is made here. Am off to the GP (as soon as working full time and looking after the kids allows).

I'm used to my hip twinging and locking/dislocating etc when I've been sitting in positions that are not recommended - feet up and off to one side under bum while watching TV or legs crossed tailor style.

Last night it actually woke me up. I awoke to find that my hip was v painful. I was lying straight out on my back, so not in any convoluted position that could stress my hip, and I couldn't sit up or roll over for a good few minutes. Every time I tried to move it stabbed painfully. Eventually I found a position that meant I could roll back on to my side and it eased up.

Not good. I've accepted that when I am not careful it will hurt, but not that it will happen all by itself while I am otherwise sleeping peacefully.

UPDATE!

I went back to the gp. Got sent for physio. They said it was probably bursitis and prescribed exercises. The exercises made things worse, which made the physio lady scratch her head and refer me back to the hospital.

I was sent to a clinic to see a triage person who prodded and poked me and declared I needed physio. When I told her I'd just come from physio (with a few month of waiting for the new appt) she said I needed to see a chartered physiotherapist as they were better (!?)

He was lovely. And did describe the exercises in more detail. But they still made things worse. He scratched his head and referred me back to the hospital.

He told me I needed a scan, but when I had my appointment, it was with an orthopaedic consultant. He expressed his surprise that the xray he was looking at was over 3 years old by then. Then he pointed out that the top of my right femur is not as round and smooth as it should be, so was catching in the socket of the hip joint. It is known as a cam impingement.

He sent me for a steroid injection then, when it only helped for a few weeks, decided I needed surgery. I will be having hip arthroscopy surgery to investigate the state of the joint, clean out any debris and shave away the excess bone in 9 days time.

I'm glad that the prospect of being pain free is a possibility.

Now all I'm stressing about is the recuperation. I hated being on crutches when I broke my leg 21 years ago.

And whether the operation will be cancelled as the timing is such that if it goes ahead I will be lucky enough to miss the stress of inspection week at school as the school gets inspected the week after my op.

Thanks for reading, if you did. :):)
