hi
DD is 4wks old and absolutely full of cold, nose and eyes are streaming and she is coughing a lot when she breaths in as snot is going down the back of her throat. She hardly slept last night as every time she tried to breath through her nose she was coughing on the flem. I tried various positions and even tried sitting up to hold her upright so it wasnt on her chest as much. I know Gp will just say its a cold but wondered if there is anything I can do as she is too young for medised etc which is currently helping Ds and his snotty nose..lol

Saline drops for her nose? Bowl of steam in the room to clear her nose a bit?

tracyk · 17/01/2006 09:51

nice steamy bathroom and sit in there for 30 mins.
Raise the end of the cot so not flat on back.

Bozza · 17/01/2006 09:52

steam before bedtime?
slightly open window
naps etc in car seat
cot propped up on phone books

Your poor DD. It is very hard when they are so little. I remember it with DS who also got a cold at 3 weeks old.

Oh, nemo! Roisin has this as well, she caught it from her older sister.

The GP recommended something called 'Little Noses' that I got in Superdrug. It's saline drops for newborns, basically.

Also we put a folded towel under her Moses Basket mattress so she's a bit propped up.

And we have a warm mist humidifier (you can do wet towels on the radiator if you have gas central heat, but we don't, we have electric storage heaters).

We took Roisin in b/c of her cough. The GP thoroughly examined her, but there were no signs of infection - fever, not feeding, etc.

Do take her in if she has problems feeding.

aww poor little thing!! i remember when DD's docs gave me some drops to put in in her nose to stop the cough and it works too - sorry cant remember what the drops called as so long ago!! and also put a pillow UNDER the mattress to tilt the baba up slighty so she can breathe.. if she rolled over to side eg if she rolled over to her right and not her left, get another pillow and the top edge is levelled with her chest so its away from her face!!

How long had she had it?

Nemo1977 · 17/01/2006 09:55

thanks all
will put towels on radiator too.
expat shes fine feeding etc and currently have her in bouncer with it in sitting up position which seems to be a bit better for her. Will pop out for saline drops when dh gets home later, tackling shops with 2 snotty tots is not my idea of fun..lol

BL she has had it a couple of days but last night was the worst of it, also was for ds too so they obviously caught it at the same time.

It's a real hanger-on, nemo. DD1 had that damn cough for a fortnight. I kept her home from ALL playgroups and activities until she kicked it, tho, b/c she'd had a cough in early December, was recovering, then FIL gave her the blasted cold and she wound up w/a nasty chest infection.

She's just gone back to Tumble Tots today.

Roisin still has an occassional cough, but the saline drops REALLY helped. I could see the boggies in her nostrils when I changed her nappy and hear them as well, poor soul!

I feel sorry for these younger siblings. My elder sister gave me chicken pox at 3 months.

biglips · 17/01/2006 09:59

i would ring her docs and get her asap as i dont leave it any longer than a week... just to get doc to check her over!

Pennies · 17/01/2006 10:00

Have got exactly the same prob (DD also age 4 weeks). I've been putting a few drops of Childrens Olbas Oil on a tissue and putting it on the radiator in her room. This morning I put her in the bathroom on her change mat and put the shower on hot and left her in the room whilst it all steamed up so that would help her a bit.

It's horrid isn't it - she seems a bit better today but she really struggled through the night, snuffling away next to me in her moses basket. It was horrid to hear.

Bozza · 17/01/2006 10:15

Yes expat, DD caught chicken pox from DS when she was 5 months and it was awful.

expatinscotland · 17/01/2006 10:17

I'm telling ya, ladies, I wish DD2 had been born in summer like DD1. SO many advantages, one being that DD1 didn't catch a cold till she was well into Calpol/Medised age. The other being that we could take her outside for hours at a time b/c it was nice and warm and light out till 11PM.

Poor winter babies!

tracyk · 17/01/2006 10:18

putting them on their tummies for a few minutes will result in a lot of snot coming out! clear them out for a while!

expatinscotland · 17/01/2006 10:21

DD2 HATED being on her tummy. She started lifting her wee head, like a turtle, and crying. It was sooo sad I just didn't have the heart to keep her like that.

tracyk · 17/01/2006 10:23

they will hate it - but it did the trick when my ds was little. I found out to my cost - after I left him on his tummy on my nice white quilt!

Bozza · 17/01/2006 11:34

expat - DD was born in May but still managed to get a cold off big bro and chicken pox, and the downside off it was that it meant that she started nursery at the end of October. Bad time to start nursery.
