I i have started having terrible backache in the past wk. Its ok during the day but starts to hurt on an evening usually when i sit down but during the night the pain is waking me during the night and i cant sleep for the pain.after about of being up the pain subsides and i feel ok. Its driving me mad and i am knackered. I havent been to the doctors yet. I havent done anything that has hurt my back and i dont think we need a new bed.
What can i put on my back that will help? I am hoping it will stop soon.thanks

I always use Tiger Balm and for short periods of time take a stronger pain killer such as Solphadene (spelling??). But if it continues it's best to find out the cause and so go to see the doctor.

Severe chronic back pain sufferer here. If you can take ibuprofen and paracetamol, then you can take the maximum dosage (400mg ibuprofen and 1000mg paracetamol) every 4-6hrs for a few days. Tiger balm/Deep Heat/Deep Freeze are good as a back rub. Heat and freeze gels are good to alternate and can be combined with the pain relief. The reason that ibuprofen and paracetamol can be taken together is because paracetamol is a painkiller whereas ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory.

What I used to do was take the freeze gel (Deep Freeze or Biofreeze are both good), put a layer on, let it dry, slap another layer on, let that dry in and put a 3rd layer of the stuff on the area.

If your back ache goes on for more than about 3 weeks, then you should see your GP to have a chat about what may be the cause. I'm in the same boat in that I didn't do anything to hurt my back and after a few months of complaining about the pain, I had an x-ray and CT scan a few weeks later. There was a lot of wear and tear in the lumbar vertabrae just above the sacral bone.

Are you in the UK at all OP? The reason I'm asking is because I have a list of addresses and phone numbers of specialised pain clinics around the UK. Although most of them are in London there are some elsewhere around the UK.

Hi,
I suffer from severe chronic back/ spine pain due to a spinal cord injury, 3 burst fractured vertebrae, spinal stenosis, spondylyosis and spondylyothesis.
I take fentanyl and morphine for my pain and use ice packs.
In the past I've had hydrotherapy and physio.
Heat packs can sometimes help (not for me though, or TENS machine.
Very basic simple exercises to keep moving gently; (1)lying on your back with knees bent and gently raising the bottom of your back off ground.
(2)Use your arms and hold your knees to your chest.
(3) going on all fours and arching your back, angry cat pose.

You haven't had the pain too long, maybe you might have just pulled a muscle.
