Can beta-blockers make you feel depressed?

I've been taking 160mg propranalol for about 2mths for migraines and they're working well.

However, since just before Xmas I've noticed my mood has really started to drop. I feel quite tearful some days, paranoid about my relationship with dh, and just generally very low with that awful feeling of hopelessness.

Could this be a side effect of the bbs or am I just going through a phase of depression? I've felt this way before, a few yrs ago and took anti-depressants for a while which sorted me out.

If it is the bbs are there different ones I could try?

After posting this last night I feel even worse today. Really v down and even have the beginnings of a migraine so worst of both worlds Sad

I'm going to get a drs appt tomorrow and ask to come off the beta blockers. You can't just stop suddenly right? Would it do any harm to just take 80mg today instead of 160mg do you think?

I think if you find you can manage on a lower dose, go for it. My DH is supposed to be on a higher dose but has managed to get by on a lower one. Definitely decrease slowly though.

rollercola i would discuss reducing the dose then working up if needs be and dont feel too dispondant about getting a migraine when i first started taking beta blockers i noticed a reduction in the severity alomost straight away, the frequency however took about a year to be noticable but i was so grateful for any help that i stuck with them and 2 and half years later i have a much better quailty of life, i am not cured by any means but i have finally stopped worrying every night whether i will wake up in the morning with a migraine,

i still get them but they are MUCH milder and not so frequent now, HTH,

but it is a crap state of affairs to be in isnt, medicine can do wonders these days but still seem to be at a dead end when it comes to migraines Sad
