BCG

5yo dc3 has been offered the Mantoux test and possible BCG vac.

Apart from this, all my dc are fully vacced, though not necessarily to exactly the published schedules.

But I'm not sure about this one. Dc1 & 2 had the BCG at about 6m because we lived in a borough which had one of the highest incidences of TB in the country. We now live in a naice little middle class town in Berkshire. Is it really necessary?

neither of mine have been offered or given the BCG

This is what the NHS says:

www.nhs.uk/conditions/BCG/Pages/Introduction.aspx

and even according to them, your 5yo would not need the BCG.

Why have they offfered the Mantoux test? Has DC been in contact with someone with TB?

PrettyCandles · 17/01/2012 10:33

They've not given any indication of that. It's based on the info I gave when he started school in September, and they've not given any reason why. First place I looked was NHS website, and according to them he's not at-risk. I thought maybe MNers would have a wider range of info.

I don't think I will take him for this vac. Nothing I have read suggests it to be necessary ATM. I would rather he have it at 12-13, so it would give him protection at an age when he is more likely to be expose to risk - if he travels, say.
