I don't normally suffer too badly, I have symbicort 200 2x a day and bricanyl as and when. I had a bit of a cold at new year and now have a persistent cough, that means I'm struggling to lie down without coughing like mad. (I'm more of a cougher than a wheezer)

Other than not lying down Hmm and taking my inhalers what can I do to damp down my cough enough for me to sleep? please

Poor thing, i've got pretty bad asthma. sound like this cold is the problem. I usually have to sleep propped almost upright when i've got a cold, but if coughing i tend to take benylin as it does mean i get a few hours sleep at least.

chipmunksex · 13/01/2012 14:56

Thanks, might try the benylin tonight.

Last night I slept on the sofa kinda propped up like ya say.

I've got a appointment next week with the asthma nurse, but hopefully it'll be better by then anyway. Smile

Have you seen a dr and had your chest listened to? If not might be worth going as you may need antibiotics and/or steroids.

I've just had a cold and have the most awful cough, esp at night. Poor DH hasn't been able to sleep with me for the last couple of nights. It's been so loud am surprised I've not woken up the whole house! I've also been wheezing a lot too.

It seems to be calming down a little since I've started the antibiotics though, and I have steroids for next week.

Hope you get better soon x

Hot ribena works for me! Also hot whiskey with honey and lemon. And run the shower very hot for 20 mins and sit in there just before bed.

If I have a cough at all I double my symbicort. Are you measuring peak flow? I've always been told to take steroids below 300, and get to hospital below 250. And antibiotics if coughing anything up that is an interesting colour!

I keep steroids and antibiotics in the house for it.

I also double my symbicort- also vicks rub on my chest gave me a good nights sleep when nothing else had worked

chipmunksex · 13/01/2012 19:39

Thanks again, will ask about whether I can up my symbicort-it did cross my mind.

Crunchy you must be a bit taller than me, my peak flow is never more than 450 and before I started on the symbicort was regularly 180! Shock It's about 300 right now.

I will go to gp on mon if still struggling. But for tonight I think Wine Grin

Have you tried monteleukast?

chipmunksex · 14/01/2012 12:15

Never heard of it-is it good stuff then?

Some times I find with a cold that if I take an antihistamine tablet it can help my asthma symptoms as it drys some of the mucus up that falls to my chest making me wheeze.

I agree upping the preventative inhaler is the way to go in the short term.

slalomsuki · 14/01/2012 12:19

Should have said I am on symbacort and was to yo up it to 4 puffs 4 times a day if bad and then use the blue inhaler as well.

CrunchyFrog · 14/01/2012 12:33

Mine's 500 when I'm good! But I play flute which really helps.

Dawndonna · 14/01/2012 13:58

chip DD2 was being blue lighted about once a week until she went on to the monteleukast. It's a tablet, one a day. Have heard a fair few good reports, might be worth a discussion with the asthma nurse.

Yes, the benylin seems to work for a few hours, as long as you use the benylin
night time one.
Don't have a milky drink before bed, milk seems to make you more chesty.
There is also : Fluimucil A 600. This will help you bring up stuff from your chest you did not even know was in there. One a day.
It has Aspartame in it. But if it is only for a few days.?
Neither my old man or myself are asthmatics, but there seems to be a strange thingy going round.
I have had to get up in the middle of the night, not being able to breathe. This is since November. It happens intermittently.
Old man asked for extra pillow in December. Same problem.
The hot whiskey, with honey and lemon sounds good.
