I am week 4 post op and am still feeling sore, particularly at the edges of my wound, it's a stingy pain. I also have a dull ache on the left hand side of my lower backand in bed I can't lie on that side without discomfort. I thought I would feel better than I do. I don't seem to have any energy still.

Is this normal?

I have had two c sections, do you think this would hinder my recovery?

I had to have a blood transfusion after the op due to a low iron level.

I haven't got a follow up appointment with the hospital (which I was surprised at). I have spoken to the Sister on the ward and she said what I was experiencing was normal but if I had any worries to make an appointment with my GP.

Hello Pilates,

I had an abdominal hys and ovaries removed 10 weeks ago, and I would say that I still had some soreness after 4 weeks, although mine was due to a wobbly belly and soreness underneath (make sure you dry the area thoroughly).
I still have some aches and twinges even now - make sure that you dont lift or overdo things, as I still feel it now.

I had a 6 week check with my Gynae - maybe you could contact your Consultant or see your Dr just to go over any concerns.
It is a big op, so it is easy to expect too much of yourself so early on, especially as I felt much better than I expected to after the first couple of weeks, so overdid things a bit, and always felt rough the next day.

Take care

I had my hysterectomy 10 days ago and to be honest feel remarkably well. I am still numb in places and the area around my belly button is slightly sore but I haven't needed pain meds for a few days.

I would suggest a trip to your GP to be honest. Even if it is 'normal' (and lets face it, everyone heals differently) at least it'll put your mind at rest. You seem to have been through quite a lot in respect to the transfusion as well.

Also definitely call the hospital and make a follow up appointment. I received mine in the Post today for 6 weeks after the op. It's an important check to be honest and does need to be done.

Hope you feel better soon

When I had a similar op - ovary out for Borderline Ovarian - my back ached for MONTHS afterwards.
Sometimes I couldn't get out of bed in the mornings - I'd be stuck there.
This is all normal.
When the stomach is cut, muscle that usually supports the spine is severed, too. This puts greater stress on the back than usual.
Eventually the pain goes.
I'm totally fine now. I reckon it took a year in total to heal regarding losing early morning back pain.

Thanks everyone.

Interesting to hear everyone's stories. I think the not knowing what is "normal" is worrying me.

I think I will make an appointment with my GP for piece of mind.

Can I ask was your stomach swollen? I look about 5 months pregnant and had quite a flat tummy before the op.

Pilates.

Yes, swelly belly is completely normal, and not just for weeks but for months especially later in the day. You are still in the very early stages of healing. I was told that by 3 months 50% of healing would have taken place, by 6 months 80% and by a year pretty much 100%.

No follow-up appointment does seem odd.

Have you ever looked at the "Hystersisters" site?

Thanks for that, you have put my mind to rest.

Wow I knew that it was a long recovery time but didn't realise it could take up to a year for a full recovery.
