mysterious hip pain?

MitchierInge · 11/01/2012 20:36

:( it might not be that mysterious, I haven't seen a dr about it. Maybe can diagnose self here with your help?

Happened about a year ago but can't remember how long for, maybe a week or two, it aches and aches and aches and radiates down my thigh. I am rubbish with pain :(

How do you sit on the sofa/your office chair/lie in bed?

Personal questions = only way to internet diagnois Grin

MitchierInge · 11/01/2012 20:53

I usually keep my heels on same level as my hips when I sit (sofa or whatever, don't often find myself in an office chair). Goodness knows how I lie in bed? I move about a lot in my sleep.

Just after I posted this thread a friend reminded me that I was complaining I'd dislocated my hip on Monday after a body sculpt class Blush lots of jumping into squats. Ride horses a lot so is a particularly annoying joint to have a problem with. Bet they caused it by being so FAT!

OP posts:
IWantMyHatBack · 11/01/2012 20:56

My SPD hip problems remain because I'm fat (and when I say fat I mean I weigh 50% more than I should do Confused god knows how that happened ! )

Sounds like dislocating will bugger you up though!

VivaLeBeaver · 11/01/2012 20:58

Do you sit on the sofa with your feet tucked under you, knees pointing one way and forwardsand feet the other way and backwards, if that makes sense? If I sit like this it upsets my hip and my physio said it's the worst position to sit in.

MitchierInge · 11/01/2012 21:01

Will it go away as your weight comes down? it must be difficult to lose it when you are in pain though? It's so limiting - walking is awful. Don't know why it suddenly feels so bad tonight, it was just achey earlier.

OP posts:
MitchierInge · 11/01/2012 21:03

That's exactly how I sit, or cross legged like a primary school child, or legs stretched out in front resting on something - it's too uncomfortable to sit like a normal person with my feet on the floor Blush

OP posts:
VivaLeBeaver · 11/01/2012 21:05

Cross legged is probably better as at least youre even on both sides. Can you try a stool to put your feet on? I'm short and it hurts my back to sit with my feet on the floor but a sotool helps. Ideally I want a sofa with reclining seats.

IWantMyHatBack · 11/01/2012 21:06

It went when I lost 2 stone yes. Somehow it all went back on again... working on it. Knees were so much better too

MitchierInge · 11/01/2012 21:08

reclining sofa would be great!

I've got quite short legs (and a long body) so I look fairly normal height but can never get my feet to touch the floor comfortably without slouching and hurting my back

am a freak :(

OP posts:
ledkr · 11/01/2012 21:08

I have had this on and off for years,i used to think it was from being of the size 14 variety but it actually went when i was pregnant and weighed 13 stones so not sure its that.I get it if i walk a long way or after i have worn high heels.
Sorry not much help just comaradary Grin

MitchierInge · 11/01/2012 21:11

always good to not have to go through it alone :)

only 41 (nearly), surely is too young for new hip?

OP posts:
Tattyhead78 · 11/01/2012 21:35

I had terrible hip pain a couple of years ago and wouldn't say am overweight. I think it was caused by riding bike with saddle too low (discovered by DF!).

MitchierInge · 12/01/2012 10:07

well it likes lying down in bed all night, let's see how stupid hip feels after 30 min aerobic class and a bomb gentle ride round some fields

OP posts:
CoffeeCamel · 12/01/2012 10:23

Reckon it's likely to be the funny-sitting shortarse thing, because I get exactly the same thing (at 42) through years of tucking my feet underneath me to sit down. I can't get comfortable any other way on normal-sized chairs, so am not sure what the solution would be Confused. Am only a couple of pounds overweight, although I do notice that it improves when I'm lighter, and at times when I haven't been sitting around much.

When it gets really bad, I find that taking a couple of painkillers actually seems to (mostly) sort it out for a few weeks at a time. I have no idea why.

MitchierInge · 12/01/2012 13:16

it definitely definitely definitely doesn't like walking around or dancing about or sitting in ANY position - about to try getting on a horse

don't really need to lose weight although I always want to

hate it when something is hurting, even slightly, and I don't know why or what to do about it :(

OP posts:
MitchierInge · 12/01/2012 17:59

vet thinks it might be some sort of progressive degenerative joint disorder

might see someone who is qualified to do human medicine and see if it is happier news

OP posts:
nursenic · 13/01/2012 09:45

I had this pain and had to stop riding for a while-sorry, not what you want to hear.

Turned out that having a built up sole on my riding boot helped to equalise a slight problem with alignment in my hip girdle and joint that stirrup adjustment did not address. The problem only became a problem as my hips aged! The alignment was not visible and did not affect my gait.

nursenic · 13/01/2012 09:47

Your springer looks just like mine! A real doppelganger. Sneaked a peek at your photos.

MitchierInge · 13/01/2012 09:57

How old is yours? I don't think I've seen an ugly springer yet, but have never seen one as handsome as mine :) best working dog at the hunt supporters dog show last year!

I couldn't ride yesterday :( but I did find zumba helpful last night, really really helpful, so I will just have to shimmy everywhere to imaginary merengue because normal walking hurts after a while and sitting in the car is unbearable. Although to be fair I find the slightest twinge unbearable.

Is your hip better now?

OP posts:
nursenic · 13/01/2012 10:39

My hip is much better generally but I still struggle to roll over in bed after a very active day and walking uphill makes it twinge. But I'm back in the saddle.
Please get it examined though as even degenerative changes can be slowed right down and you may only have to make a few modifications to life style. If you can take them, anti inflammatories such as Voltarol/Ibuprofen will help but they need to be taken pro-actively; that is, before the pain not as a response to it. Please see your GP. Any hip rolling exercise is good, isn't it? Belly dancing done gently comes to mind. I do a few stretches etc when I get up and before riding.

Yes, Springers are beautiful-I cannot imagine life without mine; he's 5 and has the gentlest, sweetest (albeit stupid) face and nature.

MitchierInge · 13/01/2012 10:52

that's reassuring, yes should get it examined properly

can't really take those ones (ulcers long ago before plus lithium) but do in emergencies, the zumba was more helpful actually!

mine is sweet if he knows and likes you, bit fierce otherwise Hmm

OP posts:
nursenic · 13/01/2012 10:55

Mine will and has defended one of my pregnant friends whilst out walking and will do the job if he has to but he's a total softie with people introduced to him.

Try also, warming gel pads or those hop/oat ones used after riding/walking and first thing in the morning, especially when it is cold.

MitchierInge · 14/01/2012 18:54

thank you for warming gel pad tip, just found this thread while writhing around wailing 'it kills, it kills' (after long day in saddle, but is painless while am ON, it's just getting off, walking, driving and everything else!) and slapped a cura-heat thing on

it says 'back and shoulder' but hip is nearly back isn't it?

worried it might be osteoarthritis :(

OP posts:
nursenic · 15/01/2012 12:03

Hope it helped. You really need a doctor to check it out. Just in case it is the start of OA. A lot can be done, earlier on but please do go.

MitchierInge · 15/01/2012 23:23

ugh hate going to dr

maybe she can diagnose me over the phone tomorrow
