Jessica's skin temperature has just read 38.4 - What do i need to do - have given calpol and stripped off down to nappy - she is very hot - not really with it and crying.... HELP SOMEONE.

You can put her into a tepid bath to cool her off more quickly. After that put a nappy and vest on. Make sure she doesn't get cold because that in itself can cause increase in temperature becasue blood vessles 'shut down' when cold and don't let heat out. If you have infany nurofen you can give that too.

A temperature isn't necessarily a bad thing - means body's immune system is responding to a bug.

thanks mears - have jsut given neurofen.... will give bath and put vest on.... god i panic

is it possible to alternate a dose of nurofen w/a dose of calplol to help decrease her temp?

bug sympathy! hope she's better soon.

gingernut · 15/01/2006 23:35

BTW nurofen can take a while to bring the temp down (up to half an hour) so don't worry if you don't see an effect very quickly.

she's had a little cough/snotty nose thing going on for a couple of days but this is awful.... i really dont know how to deal with these things - i hate it.

DH is upstairs with her at the moment while i check out NHS direct online - before anyone wonders why i am posting rather than looking after her.

JARM, it is most likely nothing to worry about - just the body's natural repsonse to infection. I know it is scary though, our ds1 tends to run very high temps when ill. Nurofen is brill. Hope you all get some rest soon.

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 15/01/2006 23:41

Thanks guys - Jess never has temps so thats why im panicking.... would it be worth a trip to docs in the morning?!

OP posts:
mears · 15/01/2006 23:44

It is OK for temp to last up to 48 hours if it goes down with calpol/nurofen. If it is still there after that then go to docs.

If she appears really unwell though the see doc

we have had to resort to a glass of water with a straw to get her to drink at all... she wont touch bottle or spouted cup. I feel a LONG night ahead of me!

Becky is really good for only being 12 weeks - sleeps mostly straight through from 6.30pm - 6.30am so not too bad, but she tends to need a lot of cuddles during the day because she doesnt sleep during the day for more than 10 minutes!

I still go to toddlers 3 x a week mainly for Jess's benefit - i think that is out of the window tomorrow though - SLEEP will hopefully be tomorrow agenda, well at least for 2 out of the 4 of us!

DH has had on-going back and knee problems for 4 years now.... he's on the mend but it keeps filling with fluid, so he can still do most things round the house so long as he rests when he needs to.

Am going to try and get some rest now - DH has just taken her out for a walk in the buggy to see if that will calm and cool her down a bit x
