Bad teeth and fear of the dentist...

After finally getting in at an NHS dentist (have first appointment booked for this Friday) I ended up at the emergency dentist last week after two nights of agony. The tooth had a big filling in which had cracked, also the tooth may be cracked and there was an infection underneath. She cleaned it up and temporarily filled it and said it may have to be taken out. I'm absolutely gutted. I had a tooth out when I was a student - right at the back and the dentist at the time told me that having it out was a better option than saving the tooth through root canal etc. How I wish I'd known better and had it done. I do brush my teeth (although never as much as this week). I know it's not the biggest problem in the world but the prospect of having had to have 2 teeth out by 29 makes me feel pretty disgusted with myself.

Not really sure why I'm putting this on here to be honest...

Well, no point being miserable about it. You are getting it sorted and can look forward to several things:
1- No pain
2- No bad breath
3- Confidence that you have good teeth with no broken bits that "Ishould get fixed but I'm too scared"
4- Nice smile
5- No pain.

Loads of people are missing more than one tooth by the time they get to 29 so just make sure that you speak to your dentist/hygienist about how to maintain their work and prevent further problems and make sure that you DO brush/floss regularly.

It always amuses me when patients think they are cheating ME if they don't clean their teeth properly, your teeth, your responsibility. SOunds like you're on the right track.

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply, I really appreciate it.

Reassuring to hear plenty of people having lost more than one tooth by 29, but definitely on a mission to make sure I keep my mouth in the best possible health I can! See what happens on Friday when I meet my new dentist.

Good luck! Remember you are the customer and if you don't like her or you think she doesn't like you then vote with your feet & find someone you are comfortable with & who understands your wishes & fears.
