Has anyone ever been given Prozac for PMT?

Just wondering cos I went to GP for the third time with PMT problems (tried B6 and primrose oil) and she suggested I use Fluxotine which is an anti-depressant. She said I would have to take it every day not just the days when I have PMT.

Am slightly worried cos at any other time of the month I am absolutely fine and have no need for anti-depressants but on the other hand would also like to feel and act better when its my bad week/s.

Has anyone else taken these? Are they addictive?

Hi,
i know that in America it is often prescribed for very bad pmt. They give it another name and dish it out but it's still the same fluoxetine.
I have taken it for depression and it totally wiped out my horrendous pmt too. I imagine it would depend how badly pmt was affecting your life.

crazydazy i get mild pmt(got it now!)and its bad enough,so i sympathise with your symptoms. However i do feel its a little strong for your doc to prescribe you something so strong as fluxtine. my doctor gave me fluxotine 8 years ago for depression aftre my 1st husband died. they didnt agree with me and i only took them for 4 months. i found coming off them really unpleasant and gad loads of nasty side effects. Im sure they work wonders for some people-someone i know has been taking them happily for years- i'd just perhaps giving it a bit of thought before you jump in.

You could try agnus castus, which is herbal. I've taken it for the past 3 or 4 months and it's worked really well. My PMT was much worse fater having dd so was willing to try nything!

i have been taking 'BOOTS' Monthly cycle capsules which have helped quite a lot. I found it took a couple of months though.

I have heard of it as a treatment for PMT. ADs like Prozac aren't addictive, but may produce withdrawal symptoms unless you tail them off gradually when stopping them. I think that Prozac is a bit of a drastic measure for treating PMT. Are you on some sort of hormonal contraception that could be exacerbating the PMT? Alternatively going on the Pill can help PMT.

notasheep · 15/01/2006 22:23

I was advised NOT to take Prozac for PMT

mummytosteven · 15/01/2006 22:25

there's also a school of thought about controlling PMT via diet. Can't for the life of me remember who has written books about it. Will post when I remember!

notasheep · 15/01/2006 22:27

Yes-dont eat entire packets of chocolate biscuits in one go!

i was given fluxotine for v.bad PMT a few years ago, it didnt do anything much.now been on danol for about 7 months, love it, no periods, suppresses all hormones, i am no longer an aggressive, murderous, depressed bully to live with!

side effects were: enlarged clitiros, deep voice and facial hair!im not joking, luckily none of the above have affected me

crazydazy · 16/01/2006 10:09

Thanks everyone, I do have quite bad PMT and have really bad sugar cravings too. The GP did suggest me trying something else first but as I had already tried vitamin B6 and primrose oil thought I would try this, maybe will just see if it does help for my next period and then see what happens.

Would like to try that agnus castus though, have heard of that before, is it expensive?

i know this is an old thread, but have been trawling google for info on prozac, been on it a week 20mg a day and can't orgasm!! looking for alternatives, have tried vit b, starflower and st johns wort, can't tolerate this, back at gp next week - but want to stop prozac.

WigWamBam · 30/01/2006 14:35

An inability to orgasm is a common side-effect with ads, but not all ads will give the same side effect in all people so you may find that a change of medication is all you need to stop this problem. The GP will be able to try you on other ads until you find one that suits you and doesn't give you unwanted side effects.

crazydazy · 30/01/2006 16:07

Have been taking the Prozac for almost 3 weeks can't notice a difference as yet but this time next week is when my PMT would start even though I usually don't come onto my period until around 15th so all will be revealed if this is actually working if not then I am definitely going back to the GP to see if there is an alternative.

crazydazy - it can take up to 6 weeks for SSRIs to work, so probably worth giving it a chance for next month if you don't find any improvement this month.

crazydazy · 31/01/2006 10:06

Oh yes she said it could take a month so best bear with it through this period then. Thanks Mummytosteven
