First aid complete kits that you buy are just full of bandages and a small pair of blunt scissors.

I have tried to think about what might actually go wrong and built my own kit accordingly.

For information - we live in a desert country and often go camping way off the beaten track.

I have included...

Hand sanitiser
Antibacterial surface cleaner

Antiseptic wound cleaning wipes
Various sterile gauze pads
Various sized wound dressings and plasters (incl waterproof and fibre free)

An elastic bandage
A cotton bandage
Bandage tape

Sterristrips

Instant cold packs

A sting remover
Tweezers
Antihistamine cream
Antihistamine syrup

Antiseptic cream (Germolene)

An eye bath and lotion

Prickly heat powder

Paediatric paracetamol syrup
Paediatric paracetamol suppositories
Paracetamol tablets

A thermometer
A fever reader

An out of date epi-pen

What do you think?

Perfect then? Nothing to improve?

Excellent!

Safety pins?

PeanutButterCupCake · 09/01/2012 07:38

Scissors?
Why do you need an out of date epi pen?
Very good first aid kit.....gold star Grin

SilentBoob · 09/01/2012 07:41

What would the scissors be for?

Safety pins. Yes. Good one.

I was prescribed an epi-pen years ago, never used it and it is still hanging around. I suppose in the case of an anaphalactic (sp?) reaction I thought an old epi-pen might be more use than no epi-pen

Erm.....emergency nail cutting? No idea it's just what you've got to have Grin
Could you not get a new epi pen incase

I love your name Smile

Sirzy · 09/01/2012 07:47

I would get rid of the out of date Epi pen!

Triangular bandage?

Depending on age of children so sort of teddy/bubbles to distract if needed?

SilentBoob · 09/01/2012 10:53

Thank you Peanut. I like it too!

Some kind of liquid antiseptic such as TCP? The wipes might not be enough for awkward cuts.

SilentBoob · 09/01/2012 11:05

I used to keep a bottle of iodine tincture but the children scream at the mere sight of the bottle. Stings too much.

Keep the scissors! You may need to cut a bandage or dressing to fit.

Do you have any gauze? If you get a deep/large cut, a normal bandage or dressing might just stick to it - gauze helps it to not stick (I think!)
Im not sure if you can it over-the-counter, but I remember when my DD had a bad burn, the doctor gave us this amazing gauze which was yellow and liquidy (looked like gauze soaked in iodine) and it was anti-septic in the gauze and had this special sticky stuff on which completely stopped it sticking to wound. I remember the DR saying it was ridiculously expensive, but would definitely recommend it - was brilliant for really sore wounds.

How about those little plastic tube things that just have sterile water in them so you can pour it over a wound to clean it out (ie without scrubbing it..).

Disposable gloves.

Tissues? (Nosebleed?)

Some Nurofen - syrup and tablets (you can take with paracetamol)

A large bandage thing that you tie up to make a sling? Suppose you could use a large bandage, but would be a bit tricky.

Maybe some ibuprofen gel (Voltarol is good) for any pulled/sore muscles.

KateShmate · 09/01/2012 11:10

Oops, just noticed that you already have gauze - sorry!
Would still recommend the gauze I mentioned though
