Chilblains and odema

QED · 08/01/2012 19:19

Have suffered from chilblains for a while and they're mostly ok. But this weekend my right little finger has swollen up so I can't bend it properly - its got a chilblain coming I think. Finger next to it also starting to swell and can't get my ring off easily. Do other people get this with chilblains or is it something else? And will all of me swell up (am hoping not!)

this isn't quite answering your question, but I started getting chilblains and also reynaulds in my fingers/toes and a year later it turned out I was hypothyroid, so worth running through the symptoms maybe and getting a blood test just to check all is ok

Thank you - have been to the doctor and had a blood test so imagine it tested for thyroid stuff. Finger actually bends a bit more now so I guess slightly less swollen.

Hate chilblains and my icy white fingers and toes. Makes me feel like an old woman Grin

it might or might not have tested thyroid - might be worth getting a copy of the results and taking a look for 'tsh' and 't4', if tsh is over 4 or so that could be causing the symptoms even though the gp might not have flagged it up as too high
chilblains are crap and so are icy white (or even blue) fingers and toes. this will now sound like boasting, but mine are now toasty and warm, they were always cold but got slowly worse over the years til last year they were awful all year. now they are cosy after just a month of meds - really woreth double checking test (thyroid function gradually gets worse too so if you were borderline say a year ago it is worth re-testing)
i should sell shares in this test lol

Should have looked on the thing to see what I was being tested for - I only got tested in about November I think and apart from the swelling now they haven't been too bad this winter so far (I do tend to wear a lot of glove and sock etc).

Can you ask to see what your results were even if you have been told they were "fine" - would feel I was wasting an appointment a bit. Although they do telephone consultations so maybe I could do that.

You can get a print out from the receptionist and then ask dr google! Or here! You need to ask for the 'reference ranges' for the thyroid tests if you had them (tsh, t4, possibly also b12, ferritin). If you had thyroid test, check your results to see if you are subclinical as well
