Mojo - for a start, Poor You this is horrible isn't it... The preparation I resorted to was Anusol... reduces the worst of the pain and shrinks the piles. You will however need to make sure you eat at least your 5 portions of fruit and veg a day to help keep your stools soft (sorry, not a nice subject) but the last thing you need to be doing is straining to go to the loo and making the haemerrhoids worse.
HTH

get 1 pint of pure orange juice and a bag of prunes (no stones) blend it together in a blender and DRINK IT!! it may taste vile but it excellent as i had it 2 weeks before i was due and i was in agony!!

DONT DELAY!!!!!!

mojomummy · 15/01/2006 13:31

thanks girls. Poo's are ok at the mo - have obviously strained though for them to come out so will try the prune mix. Have had jackets potatoes 3 times this week !

Just managed to find an old tube of protecsydl (sp?), which was prescribed by the docs last time. A lazy day ahead I think...

Oh you poor love, I feel for you - had a horrible time with piles later on in pregnancy. I think the single biggest help was putting my feet up and not sitting on them, IYSWIM, but Anusol H helped, especially the suppositories. Not much fun using them, but they did work.
Oh, and my GP said if they're external ones, try poking them gently back eg whilst in the shower possibly TMI but its supposed to help.
And yes, definitely take anything that will stop you straining.

ChaCha · 15/01/2006 18:51

I came on here to post a similar subject, I am in total sympathy with you.

I had a baby 6 weeks ago, have had it bad for the last couple of weeks. I bought some anusol yesterday, am really hoping it works. I had been in terrible pain and was absolute dreading going to the loo (sorry for TMI) even cried once because I soooo didn't want to go
Advice on fruit and veg makes sense, i know my MIL does this as she suffers terribly. In fact, she is having them removed soon.
Never had suffered with them before, I hate it.

More TMI i'm really sorry, just wondering if it's normal to notice blood - really dreading having to go to the GP with this although after having a baby there's really not much left to be shy about is there?

MarmaladeSun · 15/01/2006 22:25

Unless you've suffered piles it all seems like a bit of a snigger, but OMG...there are few things as painful. I had them when pg with DD2. It got to the stage where I was crying with them, so I forced myself to drive to the doctors,(try driving whilst attempting to hover above the seat a la public lav seat style!), and by the time I got to the receptionist I could barely speak. Heavily pregnant, and obviously in pain, the receptionist took one look and assumed I was in labour and all hell broke loose! With the whole of the surgery looking on I had to explain that I wasn't in labour; I had piles!
I was shown to an examination room, where a very unsympathetic male doctorwas summoned to have a look. I had smothered my bum in anusol, which obviously prevented him seeing properly so he proceeded to wipe it all off with one of those stiff, green paper towels...I could have bloody killed him, sadistic b***d!!!!
Anyway, lots of anusol cream and suppositories did the trick, and a few dys later I was almost pain free again but I will NEVER laugh at anyone's piles story again! You can laugh at mine though! LOL

i completely sympathise with you, i had horrendous piles, which were so agonising after ds2 that i was given morphine in the hospital, i still get them now from time to time(tmi), but if the prob persists ask your gp for lactulose which is perfectly safe and is a stool softner, try not to stand for long periods of time or sit on hard surfaces.

spacecadet · 15/01/2006 22:38

i remember the gp visiting me at home after ds2 and looking at my awful piles and exclaiming, oohh, you are in a bad way arent you(a la frankie howard), youve got them all the way round, worst case ive ever seen!!!! well thanks!

expatinscotland · 15/01/2006 22:41

ChaCha
Get some help! I had an AWFUL pile after having DD2. Midwife rang the GP and said, 'I wouldn't want to sit on that.'

He prescribed me some co-codamol and something called Xyloproct which made it go away, thankfully.

He's a twit, but one who's easy to pull some sympathy out of - mostly b/c he can't be bothered.

Suits me fine! Hand over the drugs!

snigger snigger at marmaladesun's story!

Cabe · 15/01/2006 22:56

Cha-Cha - Sooo with you on the crying about having to 'go' Mine worst after baby arrived too... he's 16 weeks now and my poor behind's just getting back to normal.
Be really liberal with the anusol and try to always remember it... the pain returns pretty darn quickly if the area's not fully healed.
And Plenty fruit and veg... much better than resorting to a Senna product and definitely don't up your fibre intake by eating bran-flakes (very quietly so not everyone can hear - it's like crapping shards of glass)

ChaCha · 15/01/2006 23:12

Mojomummy - How are you feeling now? Any better?

I'm going to take some paracetamol myself now. I don't feel like the anusol is working but I need to keep applying it I think. I'd do anything right now, sitting down is a pain in the arse! (Quite literally!)

Cabe - OMG @ the shards of glass! I feel the pain!

Not a pretty subject but am glad i've been able to read other stories. If the anusol hasn't made much difference by end of week will visit GP. Lovely! Well between the expressing, leaky boobs, housework and now piles am doing really well.
Must get pregnant more often.

gingernut · 15/01/2006 23:29

Get a prescription for lactulose. It s the only thing that softened my stools when pg, I ate mountains of fruit and veg but it didn't work .

Cabe, if it feels like you are passing shards of glass it might be an anal fissure rather than piles. the pain of which is usually likened to that! I can confirm from personal experience that anal fissures are that painful but don't know if piles can be (have had them but never that bad).

BTW I think germoloids is better than anusol (it contains a local anaesthetic).

BTW I'd avoid any painkillers containing codiene as it can cause constipation.

Cabe · 15/01/2006 23:46

Thankyou Gingernut - I've only heard of this before and didn't really know what the condition was.
Think you may well be right... at any rate I'm glad the pain is almost gone

mojomummy · 16/01/2006 14:17

well, I'm feeling throughly miserable

I took the paracetomols yesterday which helped for a few hours. managed to have a shower (& try to poke it back in) & applied the proctosedyl, then spent the rest of the day on the sofa.

Same today, hoping to see an improvement by tomorrow....

You might find it helps to rest your feet on a stool (no pun intended) or a pile of phone books when 'going'
