I'd see the dentist real sharpish and in the meantime rinse with Corsodyl, the one for gum disease.

They should see a dental hygienist asap and then start flossing twice a day.

Tonsil stones ?

I am a dentist, smells from the gums have are very distinctive. Of rotten meat. I can smell it from several feet away. If this is the smell the person concerned definitely will have gingivitis, but most probably full blown, advanced and probably neglected periodontal disease. Tooth decay is also smelly, but only usually to the dentist.

3 big causes of gum disease (though there are others):
A. Poor oral hygiene. Whatever other risk factors you have, they can be 99% mitigated by sorting this out.
B. Smoking. This will exacerbate any other risk factors.
C. Genetics. You can't help this. But worth knowing if you are high risk.

What you need to do....

  1. use soft or electric toothbrush to brush the edge of the gum as it meets the teeth. This will make the gums bleed. A lot. Ignore it. It may hurt. Ignore it. Brush the tongue too.
  2. clean between the teeth with floss or an interdental brush. Ditto regarding bleeding and pain.
  3. Use corsadyl 2-3 times a day, preferably at a different time to brushing (the detergent in toothpaste interacts with the corsadyl making it less effective and staining the teeth.
  4. Ideally stop smoking. In addition, if a denture is worn, it needs to be left out at night and cleaned well. If the fit is bad it needs to be sorted out or replaced.

Studies have actually shown, that if the above is done well you can achieve very similar results to professional treatment. Unfortunately it is very hard to do well. So....

  1. See a dentist who will either do gum treatment herself, or refer you to a hygienist. You might need a referral to a periodontist. However, I would not normally refer to a periodontist until a patient had shown that they can maintain good oral hygiene, because the specialist perio treatment will fail if the OH is poor, and if it is poor, the periodontist will probably spend ages doing OH instruction, which is a waste of their time and the patient's money.

Other causes of bad breath are digestive issues (constipation, reflux), respiratory infections (chronic chest or sinus infections).
Never come across tonsil stones, but sounds feasible.
Other infections in the mouth, including of an extraction socket.

A large and advanced tumour will smell as the tissues break down. Should be hard to miss if in the mouth, but could be present in the sinuses or oropharynx. Would give rise to other symptoms too.

I am taking orthodontic treatment, not only dental patients face this bad breath issue, we do face the same thing.I think we should be more careful about teeth hygiene whether you wear braces or not hygiene is must, My orthodontist form Orthodontic experts often guide % suggest a lot of tips about all these issues so I prefer to follow their expert advice.
