MMR and Vitamins A and C

Hi

DD (15 months) is having her MMR in two weeks. I have been looking into anything I can do to support her system. I have seen advice on increasing Vitamins A and C and probiotics a few days before and after the jab.

Has anyone else done this and if so how did you do it- with diet or with supplements?

thanks

I know vitamin A reduces the risk of complications from measles but I haven't heard of it being used alongside vaccines. Sorry! Someone else here might know more about it.

Bob Sears is recommending this, without proper science to back his recommendations. Vitamin A is a very strong regulator of genes and has been rumoured to interfere with brain development/function pretty quickly (within three weeks at therapeutic dose in animal models as far as I remember) and has been associated with depression (in teens taking it as anti-acne medication), so if you want to go the vitamin supplement route, I would stay well on the conservative side for vitamin A and not dose for longer than a week.

Catherina, vitamin A supplementation can save lives and is recommended by the WHO to treat measles in developing countries. Do you have any links to your sources? I suppose it could do damage - as most things can in large doses over time! - but it would be good to know at what level it becomes risky.

That's one study. Vitamin A is also linked to liver damage. When your child receives vaccinations you've just gotta let the immune system do its thing. If she's only 15 months and if she eats well there really is no need to supplement. Perhaps, if she now drinks cow's milk, go back to a fortified toddler milk for a week or two if you really want to ensure she'll have enough vitamins.
Hope that's a help (I'm new here, so, hello too)

There really should be no need to supplement with toddler milk at all. It's a bit of a gimmick.

Thanks everyone for the replies that was helpful and hello Autismum Smile. I would tend to err on the side of caution so if it is risky at all I won't bother. She is still on fortified milk as she doesn't like cows milk and eats a good diet. Thanks.
