Thyroid surgery - part 2....

Having had surgery to remove half of my thyroid and a rather large benign (thankfully) nodule I am still considerable discomfort three weeks later. Does anyone have any experience of this and is it normal?

The surgery went well - about three hours, and I was discharged the following day. Apart from a small issue with being allergic to the steristrips they used over the stitches all went to plan.

From what I understand most people recover quite quickly from thyriod surgery, but I am still having to take a considerable amount of painkillers - well I think it is anyway!

The nodule removed was nearly 8cm and had moved my windpipe out of place amongst other things, and had gone down below my collar bone.

I guess my question is, was it the size of the nodule that is causing the what feels to be a very slow recovery or is it normal with thyriod surgery? anyone any experience of this?

(Note: am going back to see the consultant next week and will ask then, but am getting fed up of how long it seems to be taking.)

xx

Hi June - Happy New Year!
I think 3 weeks is not time at all, and as I remember, I was still scarfing down significant quantities of painkillers. It sounds like yours was a big one, and removing it will probably have caused more trauma resulting in more pain and more swelling than might otherwise have been the case. I htink it's all very well to give 'standard' times for recovering after surgery to a particular area, but I htin it really depends on what they foudn when they got in there and what they actually had to do. Sounds like there was a lot of hoiking around in your case!

I really wouldn't worry - but I'm pleased that you have a consultant's appointment next week which hopefully will put your mind at rest. I know it can be worrying when you feel you aren't progressing as quickly as you should or 'on schedule'.

Delighted that it was benign!

Thanks Cardamom! Happy New Year to you too!

I guess I know that you're right really and it'll take time, I'm just not used to having to take it easy! Tried to sort some boxes in the spare room yesterday but by 4pm couldn't wait for more painkillers :(

Got the good news just before Christmas, which was excellent.

And thank you for your kind words - its really helped having someone who knows whats what! Wine
